The past four teams to win the D1-D2 division in the late July camp hosted at Kearney Catholic have gone on to win a state championship in November. In 2015 it was Exeter-Milligan followed by Hampton in 2016. Johnson-Brock won the team camp in 2017 and then went on to win its third straight D-1 championship that fall. Last year, BDS won the Kearney Top 10 Camp title and then won the D-2 state championship.
With its first-hand knowledge of that history, BDS mounted a comeback on Wednesday to earn its second-straight Kearney Top 10 Camp title in the D1-D2 division in what it hopes is another kickoff toward a state title.
In championship play on Wednesday, BDS came into its final match with a record of 11-5 and faced camp-leading Meridian, which came into the match with a 12-4 record. Needing a sweep, BDS was able to get it on an outstanding Meridian team by the score of 25-23, 25-20 to win an ultra-competitive division.
Overton finished third with a 12-6 record to match Meridian while CWC finished fourth and Central Valley was fifth with identical 11-7 marks.
