Some teams have a whole roster of returning players while others have enlisted some truly talented young athletes to join their team. No matter what, teams are looking to compete and impress on every level of play.
The Joust had an incredible spread of talent from liberos to middle hitters and freshman to seniors. Seeing some of the top schools in the state in one gym this early in the season is always a great experience. Brookfield Central won the tournament beating Arrowhead in the finals. Close behind and tied for third place were Appleton North and Burlington.
For this article, we will look at the young athletes on the court. It is always impressive to see a freshman step on the court and play well at a varsity level, especially this early in the season when some of them haven’t even started school yet.
Cordelia Kearns, a pin hitter for Oconomowoc, played in several matches at the Joust. She has great court awareness, a powerful swing, and a strong serve. She will be a player to watch as she grows into her role on this already offensively powerful team.
Rachel Rossing Rachel Rossing 5'9" | S Lake Country Lutheran | 2023 State WI is a setter from Lake Country Lutheran. She is a fast and very technical setter who is comfortable on the court. This team has a lot of experience with several state titles under there belts in the past few seasons and Rachel is a strong athlete who will continue that legacy.
Kyla Dunaway is a middle blocker for Kimberly and has definitely made an impact in her first few weeks on the team. She had her fair share of kills at the Joust and is keeping up with an offense that is run extremely fast. In her first match at the Joust, she pummeled a ball down the line on a slide. Kyla is easily one of the top in her class and will be a great asset to this program.
Karissa Fortune out of Appleton North is a powerful force on the pins. She is fast in her approach and has a powerful swing. She was a key player for Appleton North this weekend and will likely continue to be a go-to hitter for the team.
These are just some of the very talented young athletes who started their high school careers in the past few weeks. As the season continues it will be great to watch not only these athletes but their other classmates thrive in the world of high school volleyball.
