In talking with different coaches, there are similarities among all in how they evaluate their team. The focus is on their own side of the net while seeing a different opponent. This is a great opportunity to see how their athletes respond and a low pressure situation to try various combinations.

Scrimmage vs. DSHA, CMH, Pewaukee, Wisconsin Lutheran, and Westosha Central
The first thing I want out of our scrimmage is to get the new girls used to playing at the Varsity level. There are always some new nerves that I hope to eliminate before the first day of play. My goal is to look for different situations for hitter/setter combinations, and serve receive situations where girls are comfortable playing next to each other. I tend to mix up the libero and OH roles in left back and middle back to see who excels in each spot and to give some outsides backrow opportunities that they may not have otherwise. I also use this time for our middles to serve and play backrow.

Working through different rotations and positions, communication, chemistry. Losing 4 seniors who have been leaders will definitely be a good platform for new leaders to be born!
Emily Bennett – Neenah Head Coach
Scrimmage vs. Kaukauna, Howards Grove, and Xavier
Scrimmages are beneficial early in the season because they allow you to see a variety of line-ups in a lower pressure situation. The athletes get a chance to run through warmups and do all of the other aspects of a match without having to worry about their nerves affecting their play. After a week of pre-season practice, coaches also have a better opportunity to see what the team needs to work on as their weaknesses are uncovered against a true opponent.

Each year our approach to our scrimmage can vary slightly based upon on team composition and needs. We are excited this season to get players experience in new positions or comfortable working together. We will look at a multiple different lineups to help us determine our strengths and identify what areas we need to focus on moving forward.
TJ Rantala – Sun Prairie Head Coach
We like to use the scrimmage for a few things:
- What combinations look good together/who we like playing next to who
- It is a great opportunity to highlight what areas/rotations we need to work on
- Goal is to come out of it healthy!
Brett Damrow – Howards Grove Head Coach
Scrimmage vs. Neenah, Xavier, and Kaukauna
The main thing I look for at the scrimmage is how our athletes control the controllables. We understand that it will take a month or so to get our first touches to the level they need to be but we can always control our controllables. We really look to make sure our leadership counsel is setting our culture and the young athletes are joining in and feeling comfortable to add value on and off the court. Also we really want to set the tone of being aggressive on the service line and tenacious on defense. If we set this standard right away then we can install offensive and defense systems.
Jeff Frey – Luxemburg-Casco Head Coach
Scrimmage vs. Notre Dame, Little Chute, and Kimberly
Heading into the scrimmage we are focused on timing of our offense and more importantly the defensive side of the ball and setting the tone for the season. By the time we get to the scrimmage we have spend 3 days of 2 a-day practices beating up on ourselves. So it’s nice to get an opportunity to see what we look like and see what specific areas we really need to work on before we head to our first tournament of the year.

I love the opportunity after only 5 days of practice to already get low pressure, match like scenarios in. We have been working through setter connections and are hoping to see that shown this weekend. In addition, we’ve placed a large emphasis on serve receive offense and are excited to stat serve receive and our offensive efficiency on first ball kills to see if it’s where we want it to be. Finally, this is a great chance to throw in new line ups and see who plays well next to each other.
