Continue ReadingMeet Kelly, a young, capable setter from Rochester Mayo High School At 5’11” she is senior with a lot of experience. As a member of the Spartan’s varsity team, she and her team will hope to regain position in the competitive Big 9 conference.
Her strengths include: jump setting quicks in the middle, protecting the right back corner with her long reach, and fast sets to the outside. Watching her highlight tapes on HUDL isn’t the same as seeing her execute her high speed offense. Her experiences playing the best competition have equipped for what is to come.
Her club team this past season was the very successful SMV 18-1. This team allowed her to demonstrate her dynamic style of play; with the help of huge hitters like Nicole Lund: 6’2” (now playing at Illinois State) Katelyn Prondzinski: 6′ from Stewartville, and three from Kasson-Mantorville: Bailey Berge, Emiliee Terry, and Caroline Braun. Having a team with such powerhouse players can bring a lot of pressure especially in the setter position. Klees has impressed us with her calm, composure and relaxed style of play. With many of her teammates older and committed to big name schools, it would have been easy to crack under the pressure; but in April, Kelly got the recognition she deserves. After her senior year she will attend and play at Minnesota State -Moorhead.
But before she heads off to her collegiate career the Mayo Spartans are hopeful for strong season. In the middle she will have SMV teammate Emma Goss (6′). The two have a strong connection on the court having played together for years. Goss will be a highly sought-after player this year with balanced skills on offensive and defensive. Her physical presence on the court will help Mayo match up with bigger schools. Klees will look to spread the ball between Goss and other top athletes on the team: Kennedy Hady, Hannah Hanson, and Anna Miller. Lastly, her younger sister Lauren Klees will also be a part of the team making it a special year for the senior and family.
