Even though the top two teams in each of the four pools wound up advancing to the championship bracket, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t any drama or upsets. Although, the most drama and only upset came in Pool D where fourth-seeded Omaha Duchesne took on fifth-seeded Omaha Marian.
After Marian took the first set 25-21, Duchesne came back to win the second set by an identical 25-21 mark. Marian then got off to a blistering start in the third set and had leads of 13-4 and 17-9 before the Cardinals started to heat up. A Mayah Delgado-Walker kill for Duchesne wound up tying the score at 23-23, but Marian got the final two points to pull the upset and win the decisive set 25-23.
In Pool A, overall top seed Skutt Catholic had a fairly clean evening, sweeping Bellevue East, Lincoln Southeast and Western Christian of Hull, Iowa, in its pool without giving up more than 20 points in any set. Western Christian finished second, beating Lincoln Southeast in a crucial match 25-20, 25-20.
In Pool B, upset-minded Papillion-LaVista South took set one from Class A #1 Papillion-LaVista 25-21, but the Monarchs came back to win the next two sets 25-16, 25-13 to win the pool with a perfect 3-0 record. Papillion-LaVista South finished second by beating a feisty Bellevue West squad 25-20, 25-10.
In Pool C, neither Millard North nor Millard South were pushed very much in their first two matches of the tournament, but they certainly pushed each other in their match to determine the pool winner. Millard North, which suffered a 3-1 loss to Gretna the night before, held on to win the first set over the Patriots 32-30 before completing the sweep by winning the second set 25-15.
