Lot of variety and even more talent that will be heading across the country to some top tier programs. Here are a few athletes who are highly effective with completely different styles in similar positions.
Cianna Selbitschka#1 Cianna Selbitschka – Kokoro – North Branch – Committed to Minnesota-Duluth
#3 Elizabeth Helmich – MN Select – Wayzata – Committed to James Madison
These athletes are some of the top point scorers in the state. Selbitschka had one of the best state tournaments in 2018, leading North Branch to a state title with three matches, all going five sets with nearly 6 kills per set. Selbitschka is the top prospect in the state with her ability to score in all rotations. There were times in 2018 where she would make a dig and was already being set in the backrow before getting in any position to attack – however, she would still find a way to score points. Helmich is the lefty with a ton of pace on the ball and can hit any type of angle. Her efficiency is incredibly high and will be a big piece to the Wayzata puzzle this season as they will look to get to the state tournament with a strong Senior class.
#2 Maddie Whittington – Kokoro – Stillwater – Committed to Illinois (Title Photo on Left)
#4 Olivia Tjernagel – High Voltage – Mayer Lutheran – Committed to Northern Iowa (Title Photo on Right)
Whittington is a strong, physical middle blocker who can take over a game at the net offensively and defensively. She has the strength and quickness to get from pin to pin and also run a variety of tempos. Both of these athletes were named to the All Tournament Team at the state tournament for their respective classes. Tjernagel plays well above the net. With experience with the USA HP program, her game continues to evolve. She will be heading to Northern Iowa, which has had great success recruiting out of Minnesota and is a consistent force to be reckoned with in the NCAA Tournament. Her future with the Panthers could be as a middle, but with her athleticism she could be really effective on the pin as well.
#5 Kali Wolf – Northern Lights – Waconia – Committed to New Mexico
#6 Jordan Stalpes – MN Select – Champlin Park – Committed to Omaha
Six rotation outsides. Both of these athletes are very similar in their style with how they can do everything from serve receiving, backrow attacking, and being creative from the outside in how they can score points. Wolf will be heading to New Mexico and Stalpes to Omaha which are both rising Division 1 programs. Stalpes was named to the 2018 All Tournament Team at the Minnesota state tournament where she won a state title with Champlin Park.
