Ramsey took a priority walk-on offer from Kansas State while on an official visit earlier this month and the Norris standout pointed to the relationship she was able to develop with the Wildcat coaching staff as the main reason why she chose the Big 12 school as her college home.
“I went to a camp earlier in the summer and after that I had talked on the phone with both coaches and I knew they were interested in me. I then went back for another camp a bit smaller with higher skilled players. After that camp they talked to me a bit more about the recruiting process and asked me to come out for an official visit,” Ramsey said. “I knew they wanted me before the visit but coach Fritz made that clear when I was there as well.
“The coaching staff really stood out to me right away. I loved the way they coached. You could tell all three of them genuinely cared about each one of the girls yet wanted the same goal, a win. This made all the players not feel like they had to work hard for them but rather they WANTED to work hard for them.”
When Ramsey gets to Kansas State, she is likely to find a very competitive situation for playing time in the back row. Dru Kuck is a true freshman starting at libero this season for the Wildcats. Kuck originally committed to Wisconsin as a freshman in high school, but some issues led to her decommitting late in her high school career before finally landing at Kansas State this past summer.
Kansas State also has a sophomore and two freshmen defensive specialists on the roster this season.
Ramsey said she originally thought she might want to get further away from home for college and was looking at schools in California and the Carolinas, but she never went out there on visits. Other than the Kansas State camps this summer, she also went to camps at Omaha and South Dakota, but said Kansas State always felt like the right place, “as soon as I stepped on campus I knew I was home,” she said.
Ramsey originally thought as a younger kid that soccer was her sport, but feel in love with volleyball once she made the positional switch from setter to libero and she has never looked back. Now, she said, she’s excited to look forward to what comes.
“I’ve been playing volleyball since I was 6 years old and I had always liked it but it had kind of taken a back seat to soccer, which at the time was my true passion,” she said. “However, the more competitive volleyball got and once I moved from a setter to a libero, I really found where my heart belonged and that was on the volleyball court. But it’s truly a dream come true (to commit to a Division I program) and it kind of is still surreal a bit and I have to remind myself that this is what I’ve been working so hard for and this is truly where the journey begins.”
