Saturday was filled with strong volleyball from Class B and Class C schools from around the area. Here are five standout players who made the weekend even more enjoyable.
1. Masa Scheierman (York High School- #15)
Masa is an offensive powerhouse. The 6’1” sophomore outside from York High School is a natural leader on the court and is not afraid to be aggressive. Athletic, with good hops and quickness, she is an effective hitter both in the front and back rows. She has a solid hit and moves her shot around the block well. When she connects to quick sets, Masa is nearly unstoppable. With her solid all-around play and offensive power, Masa will be a player to keep an eye on.
2. Lindsey Thiele (Bishop Neumann- #13)
Don’t overpass to Lindsey or she’ll make you regret it when the ball is slammed right back at you. Lindsey, a 6’0” senior middle, made a big impact both blocking and hitting. Plus, add to the fact that her defense is strong and that makes Lindsey a dominate all-around player. In the front row, Lindsey is smart, especially tipping to holes. In the back row, she reads the other team’s offense well and had some great digs. Lindsey is a fun player to watch as she capitalizes on other player’s errors.
3. Kaitlyn Church (Beatrice- #23)
The ultimate right pin, Kaitlyn shows how the position should be played. Kaitlyn, a 5’11” junior lefty, is a dominate force for Beatrice. She sets a solid block, has a lethal serve and is overall a smart player. Having a multitude of shots in her arsenal, Kaitlyn pushes other defenses to adjust or she gets the better of them.
4. Tria McLean (Battle Creek- #17)
Tria’s the definition of a fundamental all-around player; she can set, hit and pass. Tria is a senior setter/middle. With good hands and a cannon for an arm, she’s a weapon. Her outside line shot is textbook, her middle footwork ensures a strong, closed block and her setting is solid. With quick hands and quick feet, Tria is a joy to watch.
5. Paytyn Taake (Battle Creek- #1)
The quick-footed sophomore Libero seems to appear from nowhere. Paytyn reads the hitter well, has good lateral movement and is not afraid to hit the floor. She serve-receives well with lots of talk and is obviously trusted by her teammates. Paytyn makes Battle Creek’s offense look smooth and consistent with her excellent passing, and her quickness makes defense look easy.
