Athletes will go on to college, some will play volleyball, others will just focus on their studies, but for the sake of the game I always like to see athletes get involved somehow whether it be playing intramurals, coaching, reffing, or doing something related to the game. The volleyball community is a great one to be apart. This weekend at the Charger Rally, there are already athletes who will be future teammates as well as seeing each other across the net at the college level.
Big Ten Connections
Minnesota – Anna Wolf (River Falls), Mckenna Wucherer (Brookfield Central)
Illinois – Brooke Mosher (Waterloo)
Wisconsin – Saige Damrow (Howards Grove)
Being in the heart of Big Ten country, there are plenty of opportunities to see great volleyball within a relatively short distance with some of the top programs in the nation. Anna Wolf of River Falls has expanded her game immensely after playing on the MN Select 18-1 club team who finished in the top eight of USAV 18 Open last spring. Mckenna Wucherer earned All American honors at USAV 16 Open (she technically could have played 15s). Brooke Mosher and Saige Damrow play for FC Elite, Mosher is an electric all-around player who will go on to set at Illinois, where Damrow is one of the top liberos in the state regardless of class. Wolf out for River Falls with a back injury, but Wucherer, Mosher, and Damrow will be taking the court in what could be a prelude of Big Ten battles in the future.
Missouri Valley Conference
Northern Iowa – Tayler Alden (Oconomowoc)
Loyola-Chicago – KJ McNabb (Sun Prairie), Emily Banitt (River Falls) – Title Photo
Illinois State – Katelyn Lefler (Hamilton)
McNabb and Banitt are two of the most electric and dynamic players you will find in the state. Loyola is building a solid pipeline into Wisconsin prep athletes. Who will they see across the net potentially this weekend and for the next four years? Taylor Alden, the top setter in the Class of 2020 who has committed to play at Northern Iowa, a perennial NCAA tournament team. Lefler is a setter/right side for Sussex Hamilton committed to Illinois State who is coming off a NCAA Tournament as well.
Northern Sun (NCAA Division 2)
Bemidji State – Maddy Weyker (Brookfield Central)
UM-Duluth – Maddi Kealy (River Falls), Payton Addink (Sun Prairie)
Upper Iowa – Nicole Pozorski (Mukwonago), Madelyn Rettler (West Bend West)
Winona State – Sidney Paulson (West Bend West)
MSU-Mankato – Brooke Bolwerk (Appleton North)
Augustana (SD) – Sam Miller (Waunakee)
The Northern Sun, which is a Division 2 conference with teams from Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota is no joke. The last Division 2 poll released this past week had eight teams from the NSIC rated in the top 25 with Duluth ranked 4th. Upper Iowa, which is located in Fayette, Iowa and will welcome Rettler and Pozorski is a major program on the rise landing a spot in the to 25. Wisconsin has been a major recruiting battleground for some of these Division 2 programs.
