Probably the most anticipated match in this first month was the face-off between class AAA powers #4 Lakeville North and #5 Lakeville South . Not only are both programs yearly contenders, this season features the emergence of each team’s respective power hitter as their primary threat following the graduation of their bombers from a year ago. Junior outside hitter Maddie Hornyak of North and junior opposite Ava Moes Ava Moes 6'3" | RS Lakeville South | 2021 State MN from South each terminated 22 kills to offset the reliable point scoring they both provide. It was in North’s depth and balance offensively that ultimately earned them the 3-1 win in a very spirited post-season like atmosphere. Junior middle Ella Thompson Ella Thompson 6'1" | MB Lakeville North | 2021 State MN asserted her physicality in a number of ways, including 12 kills on a .474 attack efficiency. Her middle counterpart, junior Abbey Milner, hit .429 in terminating nine kills and also provided a big spark at the service line in leading North with four aces. The third Panther to reach double-figure kills was junior outside hitter Savannah Polzin as she contributed 11 kills on a .333 hitting percentage. Sophomore opposite Olivia Foss Olivia Foss 5'8" | S Stillwater | 2022 State MN added nine kills. Collectively, the Panthers hit an impressive .340 for the match under the direction and leadership of sophomore setter Abby Jandro who dished out 58 assists over just four sets for a 14.5/set average. With the win, North continues to solidify themselves as a big contender in Section 1AAA and towards a great run at a state crown. Given that their roster primarily is comprised of sophomores and juniors, the Panthers are not showing many signs of a let down from 2018 and the departure of several key elements from their offense. This is a squad that brings great individual experience to the court, which includes some very noteworthy prospect potential that combines high level club training and competition the past several months with an incredible competitive culture within their high school program. If not there already, add the above athletes to your list of ones to watch.
