Continue ReadingFormer Bellevue West standout Ashley Petak has held the record for most career assists by a Class A volleyball player since 2006. After 13 seasons with the record, she is about to hand it over to Millard North senior Izzy Lukens.
Lukens, who has guided the Mustangs to three Class A state championship matches – and two state titles – since her freshman season, currently has 3,765 career assists. Petak – who helped guide Bellevue West to four state titles in her career – holds the record with 3,795. That leaves Lukens just 30 short of the record.
Tonight, Class A #3 Millard North hosts #5 Millard South in a best-of-five match, meaning Lukens will play a minimum of three sets. For her career, Lukens is averaging 10.3 assists per set for her career and she is averaging 10.6 per set this season. In Millard North’s four previous best-of-five matches this year, Lukens has had 42, 31, 37 and 42 assists in those matches.
Should the record not fall tonight, it certainly will on Thursday of this week when the Mustangs travel to Omaha Northwest for a best-of-five match.
Petak’s career assist record is one of the longest-standing assist records in the state. The state record for most assists in a career belongs to Lauren Cook, who finished her career at Lincoln Pius X with a then-Class B record 4,511.
In order to break Cook’s record and become the all-time assist leader in state history, Lukens would need to finish the year with 1,169 assists. Lukens finished with 1,181 assists her sophomore year when she averaged 10.5 per set – which is just a hair under what she is averaging this year.
