Continue ReadingOn Tuesday night sophomore Lilly Meister, from Rochester John Marshall, snapped a six year old state record for number of blocks in a single match. Meister defended her team at the net with 16 ace blocks against cross-town rival Rochester Mayo. The previous record was set in 2013 by Taylor Holicky. The match was five sets long, giving this young sophomore several opportunities to beat the school and state record. It was an intense battle back and forth between both teams, but Lilly’s incredible play gave her team the edge.
Mayo squeaked out of the first set with a win 27-25. Then JM answered back with a dominant 25-17. They played the back and forth game until JM ended things with their 15-11 victory.
Lilly is a 6’2” sophomore. This dual sport athlete lends her skills to the volleyball when she’s not playing for her high school team and AAU basketball. As a freshmen she committed to play at the University of Kansas. For the Meister family, basketball is the families game. Both her mom and dad (6’8” and 6’2” respectively) played college basketball at SDSU. Her older brother has been a fixture for the John Marshall boys team for many years too. It would be easy for her pass on the volleyball season, but her team wouldn’t be the same without her.
The Rockets are highly favored in the Big 9 conference; they proved why with their Tuesday night performance. Of course it takes more than blocks to win. Meister had 6 kills. Her senior, teammate and Northern Lights player, Kaitlyn Steffes has been on our Prepdig radar for a awhile (but still unsigned.) She had a game-high 28 kills for the night. Allyssa Ihde (sr.) added 12. And left-handed,5’7”, junior Chayse Paulson executed the offense with 46 set assist.
JM is 6-2 and will face some strong competition at their tournament this weekend hosted by Jackson County Central.
