From the Missouri River to Central Iowa to the Quad Cities, there have been numerous ranked matchups featuring top teams and even some upsets where some shifting in the rankings is bound to happen. Here is a quick snapshot of a few ranked matchups and some upcoming matches where ranked conferences rivals will do battle.
Sophomores Rolling With Wilton
Ella CafferyKelsey Drake and Ella Caffery have become quite the dynamic duo for Wilton who was a bit of a question mark heading into the season with the graduation of Division 1 recruit, Aubrey Putnam. Drake and Caffery have been setting to each other and racking up big time stats and wins, most recently against #3 in Class 3A West Liberty in four sets. Caffery had 19 kills and 24 assist swhile Drake had 21 kills and 18 assists. This match was almost too close to call with the scores going 25-23, 25-27, 26-24, and 25-23.
West Liberty Comes Back Against #1 Tipton
West Liberty has had a rigorous schedule, dropping their last two matches after going undefeated to start the season. A tough loss to Nevada and a narrow loss to Wilton definitely fuels the fire heading into the match at Tipton. Macy Daufeldt and Martha Pace combined for 60 kills against Wilton and will look to repeat against Tipton.
Tipton In a Tough Stretch As Well
Tipton was able to win the Linn-Mar Tournament defeating Davenport Assumption 2-1 to claim the title. Assumption advanced to the title game after defeating Pleasant Valley, a top ten Class 5A team in the semifinals. I wrote earlier this week the depth of Class 3A in this section of Iowa, but throw Wilton into the mix in Class 2A and it means no nights off for these squads. Tipton will play Wilton, @ Wilton next Tuesday, September 24.
Dowling Fights Back, Defeats Ankeny
Dowling has had some tough losses, including one to Ankeny, and two to Valley and Waukee. You can’t throw a rock in Central Iowa without it landing by a really solid volleyball team. This past Tuesday night it was all Maroons taking Ankeny in a sweep of three sets. The balance of Dowling is going to be tough to match all season.
Big Match On The Missouri River
Sergeant Bluff-Luton is unscathed so far this year, but will be heading to Waukee for a tournament this upcoming weekend. Council Bluffs Abe Lincoln will be at Red Oak for a tournament this Saturday, but come Tuesday night it will be a battle between two of the MRC powers. Kenzie Foley will be the dominant outside hitter for the Warriors where she is averaging close to five kills per set. Elaina Bohnet, a solid six rotation outside is continuing from where she left off in 2018, already surpassing 100 kills. This will be the top match in Western Iowa next week.
The Battle At Boji
Western Christian has a 1,765 set win streak in the Lakes Conference – I just made that up, but I wouldn’t doubt that number is close. The Wolfpack is the team to beat in Northwest Iowa, but they will be heading to Spirit Lake on Tuesday, September 24 to take on a 20-2 Spirit Lake Indian squad that is experienced and athletic led by UW-Milwaukee recruit Emma Loveall and the do it all setter in Emma Jenness.
