Continue ReadingThe majority of high school volleyball matches are played during the week on, primarily Tuesdays and Thursdays with the occasional Monday or Friday game. Likewise, the start times in different areas may differ but all varsity matches are in the evening. Well, things are changing. Teams have come up with a new way to celebrate school spirit during their Homecoming week by hosting a home volleyball match during school hours! And we are excited to see what the innovative idea will inspire.
Last year was the first we heard of a day match that wasn’t part of a weekend tournament. It was noted in Chris Fitzgerald’s article Five Star Rating of Kasson Mantorville with a Big Crowd, Pep Band and Robots. This generates more hype for volleyball during homecoming. Students who may not normally attend have a chance to easily add it to their school day schedule. It will be hard to beat the talented Komets on their home court in this setting, but Lakeville South and their leaders: Ava Moes, Emily Moes, Teagan Sarkey, Emily Torborg, and Payton Stier; but they have a better hope than most.
This year Kasson has decided to take on the mighty AAA school: Lakeville South . Varsity match will take place in Kasson at 1pm, September 27th! Not only can you expect a great, competitive match, but loads of school spirit from a huge student section. The fun doesn’t stop there, the school has organized a tail-gating party with food before the KM football team takes on the Byron Bears that night. It will be hard to beat the talented Komets on their home court in this setting, but Lakeville South and their leaders: Ava Moes, Emily Moes, Teagan Sarkey, Emily Torborg, and Payton Stier; but they have a better hope than most.
Other school’s have joined in on that excitement. The Triton Cobras will also host a non-conference match against the St. Charles Saints tomorrow as part of their homecoming festivities. The teams have agreed to try out the fun for the next few years, when Triton will visit St Charles. The saints are also bringing a fan-bus to the afternoon match adding to the frenzy. Again, it hard to imagine upstaging the home team, but top players for both teams include: Chelsea Lasker (senior. S-Triton), Isabel Valdez (6’1” MH -Triton, Ashley Paul (5’6” S – SC) and Lauren Delger (5’6” freshman – SC)
Can you think of a better way to promote school unity, sportsmanship and volleyball? We can’t, and hope more take part in this new volleyball trend.
