Waukesha South Sweeps North Breaking 46 Game Conference Losing Streak
Waukesha South had a huge night on Thursday. Similar to many teams across the state they played in one of their first conference play matches of the season. But for this South team much more was on the line. Coming into this season they had not won a conference match in about 6 years.
They went into their match against cross-town rival Waukesha North motivated and energized, and it showed. They came onto the court and not only won the match but also swept North in straight sets.
This win broke a 46 game conference losing streak for the Blackshirts. They compete in the Classic Eight conference which is highly competitive with Oconomowoc, Catholic Memorial, Kettle Moraine, Muskego, Mukwonago, and Waukesha West rounding out the conference. This conference is stacked with great volleyball programs and bringing home a conference win to Waukesha South is a huge accomplishment.
Senior libero Nicki Kammerzelt was a key player on the court. She had 18 digs during the match and plenty of service receptions. She read the opposing offense well and was all over the court in her coverage.
Freshman outside hitter Maddie Berger was dynamic throughout the match and a go-to hitter. She led the team in kills for the night and has stepped onto this team as a solid athlete in her freshman year.
Corrin Harrington, a senior middle, made an impact in a handful of ways. She had five blocks on the night and five aces as well. She was a leader on the court throughout the match and will be a key player through the season for South.
Coach Tina Zelinski commented:
“This was a huge win for us breaking a 46 game losing streak within the conference. We played our game and felt good about taking it in 3. The girls came into this season amped up and with a confidence I haven’t seen before. I feel our team is as strong as it ever has been and we are only getting started. With moving some girls’ positions around and having a new freshman with us, I feel that we are still going through our early season growing pains and we have the potential to get even better as we settle in. I am very excited about what this group could accomplish this year if we play to our fullest potential.”
This was a huge team win for the Blackshirts who won a historic match for their program last night.
