Here is a look back at some of the highlights you might have missed.
Millard North Invitational
Perhaps the most competitive tournament in the state of Nebraska this season, the Millard North Invitational featured six ranked teams from Nebraska as well as one of the best teams from Iowa and a national power from Kansas.
The 9-team tournament featured host Millard North, Millard West, Millard South and Elkhorn South – all ranked in Class A – as well as Skutt Catholic and Omaha Duchesne – both ranked in the top four in Class B. Cedar Falls – the top-ranked team in Iowa according to the AVCA/USA Today high school rankings and St. James Academy – the #3-ranked team in Kansas by the same poll – also made the trip up. The ninth team was Class C-1 Omaha Concordia.
Cedar Falls – which hadn’t dropped a set coming into last week – won Pool A with a sweep of Omaha Duchesne and a 2-1 win over Elkhorn South. St. James Academy won Pool B with wins over Millard West and Millard South. In Pool C, Millard North held of Skutt Catholic 25-22, 20-25, 25-22 to win the pool after both teams beat Omaha Concordia.
In the championship pool, both Cedar Falls and St. James defeated Millard North and St. James defeated Cedar Falls in three sets to win the tournament title.
In the Silver Pool, Elkhorn South swept both Millard West and Skutt Catholic to finish fourth. Skutt Catholic defeated Millard West to finish fifth.
In the Bronze Pool, Millard South defeated both Omaha Concordia and Omaha Duchesne to take seventh place and Duchesne topped Concordia.
Norris Invitational
The top-two teams in the tournament wound up meeting for the championship as Class B #1 Waverly defeated #3 Norris 25-19, 25-17.
Whitney Lauenstein had 14 kills and four digs for the Vikings in the win and Atley Carey and Abby Plouzek each had five kills. Kelsey Perrotto had a team-high seven digs and Annika Evans had 22 assists.
For Norris, Ella Waters had nine kills and Kalli Kroeker had five. Molly Ramsey had eight digs.
In the third-place match, Platteview defeated Seward 25-18, 25-18.
Kearney Invitational
Gretna continued the hot start to its season by improving to 8-1 on the year with four straight-set wins in the round-robin tournament.
Gretna swept North Platte, Kearney, Grand island and Grand Island Northwest in the tournament. Kearney, Northwest and North Platte each finished the tournament with a mark of 2-2 and Grand Island went 0-4.
Cozad Invitational
Class C2 #1 Hastings St. Cecilia won the Cozad Invitational with a 25-16, 25-22 win over Ogallala in the championship.
Tori Thomas led the undefeated Hawkettes with 12 kills and Katherine Hamburger had seven. Erin Sheehyhad 10 digs and Makenna Asher had 16 assists.
For Ogallala, Jenna Curtis had five kills Rylee Dehning had 23 digs and Elyce Talevera had nine assists.
In the third-place match Sidney defeated Centura 25-20, 25-6.
Malcolm Invitational
In a match to start the tournament on Thursday, Ashland-Greenwood stunned Lincoln Lutheran 25-21, 25-23 and carried that momentum all the way through the weekend as it beat Malcolm 27-25, 22-25, 25-22 on Saturday in the championship.
In the championship match, Carly VonRentzell led the Bluejays with 11 kills and Saige Christo added seven. Alexa Edmisten had 24 digs and Saige Craven had 16 assists.
