Today we give a closer look to the powerful middles and outsides. It’s a group with some names you definitely know = and a few you may not.
Outsides
Aly Anderson – Platte County
Anderson is having a stellar junior season, averaging 2.6 kills per set while hitting .257. She has also managed 97 digs in 27 sets played. Platte County and Park Hill could possibly face each other in this tournament, which would be an interesting story line, considering the two teams just came off a five-set thriller earlier in the year with Platte County coming out on top. Anderson had 18 kills in that match.
Kristen Birmingham & Aile Aiono – Park Hill
Birmingham – courtesy of KC Power VolleyballWe all know about Kristen Birmingham out of Park Hill. The University of Oklahoma recruit is chugging along on the outside, with 97 in 25 sets played so far in 2019. Because hitting .268 is just scratching the surface, the junior also has 16 blocks, 84 digs and 11 aces. Aiono, who is an OPP (we decided she deserved a place on this list and though it probably should have been on yesterday’s list, decided this would also suffice), is a Jane-of-all-Trades; the junior is hitting .294 so far in 2019 and has 27 kills.
Erika Deguzman – Winnetonka
Deguzman is having a remarkable senior season for Winnetonka. She is averaging 3.4 kills per set so far this season and is a presence defensively with 86 kills in 33 sets played. Deguzman is hitting an impressive .274 with her 113 kills.
Middles
Kate Brown – Platte County
Brown had an excellent freshman season for Platte County in 2018, hitting .318 in 75 set while totaling 159 kills. Her efforts cemented her a place on the Prep Dig 2022 Watch List. The KC Dynasty Club player also has had experience at the USA Volleyball Junior National Championships.
Katie Kasten – Smithville
Kasten – courtesy of hudl.comAll-district last season in the middle, Kasten is picking up where she left off in her junior campaign. Kasten has already recorded 28 blocks in 24 sets this season. She also has 52 kills and is hitting .256. Smithville is hoping to turn some heads and the team is struggling a bit so far in 2019.
Juliana Lupercio – Winnetonka
Lupercio has been a solid presence for Winnetonka in the middle in 2019, especially defensively. The junior has 27 blocks in 33 sets played. She has also amassed 47 kills.
