Open Gyms Mark the Start of Club Season
If you happen to be on one of the hundreds of teams who were eliminated last week in the playoffs, don’t worry, instead wash your knee-pads and get back on the court. The club season is tip-toeing it’s way back into your life and we couldn’t be more excited. Here are a few things to consider before the teams are picked:
Choose wisely – The club you pick to play for is an important decision. And before rushing back to your club from last year, ask yourself these questions:
- What is the reputation of the club? Are they an elite program?
- How will it affect your family financially?
- Will you get the level of play you are hoping for? Will you get to travel, try to qualify for nationals?
There are so many great programs now all over the state. Don’t be afraid to branch out from your high school or friends.
Playing time – Of course we don’t have to tell anyone about this, as it is the first thing on everyone’s mind; however,
- What if you don’t make the top team? Are you prepared to play on a lower team? Sometimes it is better to be the leader on a lower team then a back-up on the top team. Remember this is the season where you can really improve your game, so you want to be on the court as much as possible.
- What position will the coach be having you play? Are you open to change? They may see something in you that other coaches have not. Be open to it
- Will you be able to fully commit to the practice schedule? If you have lots of other commitments, make sure you discuss this with your potential coach to see how it will interfere with playing time.
Be seen – Today, coaches have a general idea of who will be trying out for their teams. Some may even reach out to certain individuals, but even if you haven’t personally been contacted by a club, get out there and be seen! Go to open gyms. If your high school season is done, you can go to an open gym in your area. These are meant to give the club directors a picture of who and how many will be coming. So, attend and make your presence known:
- Introduce yourself to as many coaches as you can. Tell them your name or ask a question.
- Be a good teammate. Interact with other players (yes, even the one’s you don’t know!)
- Keep it positive. Be loud and celebrate your success. Good energy is contagious-so spread it around!
- Stand out- whether its the way you do your hair, or a different color sock, have something on your that makes you easy to notice in a crowd.
Prepare and Practice – Last, make sure you take some time off to relax for the season. Tryouts will be here very soon, but you want to make sure you come back to the court with enthusiasm. Practice some of the skills that will help you at tryouts, but also remember how good your skills are and take time to recuperate from the season.
