In some people minds, the biggest upset being Oak Park River Forest, #20, defeating #4 Napervile Central and #13 Hononegah in pool play. Just don’t tell that to the Huskies. They will face Joliet Catholic Academy in a quarterfinal tilt. JCA #12 knocked off #5 Wheaton Warenvile South. The winner won’t have it easy as they face either #9 St. Charles East or #1 Benet, arguably one of the best teams in the state.
In the last surprise of the day, #10 West Aurora defeated #7 Geneva 19-25, 25-23, 25-21. They also won over host Glenbard East in two straight sets. They face Mother McAuley in the round of eight. The Mighty Macs are one of the hottest teams in the state. In the last quarterfinal, Waubonsie Valley will face off against Huntley.
Five players stood out, making a difference in their team’s success on Friday night.
Name Yr, Ht, Pos, Team, Club, Commitment
Taylor Jakubowski, 2020, 5’8, S, Huntley
Digging everything hit her way, Jakubowski was unstoppable on defense, almost single-handedly shutting down Providence Catholic. Her setting was just amazing!
Olivia McPherson, 5’8, 2020, OH, West Aurora
In two matches, Olivia McPherson had 13 kills, 1 BLK, and 19 digs. The team’s offense was balanced, but so was Olivia. her contributions as an all around player helped the team to an upset win!
Chloe Gill, 6’1, OH, 2021, OPRF, 1st Alliance VBC, Uncommitted
Oak Park River Forest is a prime example of win as a team, lose as team. At the end of the day, They PLAY as a team. Chloe jumped out of the gym and has mad hops! As a junior, she is a compliment player, sometimes overshadowed but never out-hustled! One more reason OPRF is in the Gold Division.
Emily Wilson, 2021, 6’3, OH, Joliet Catholic Academy,
Hitting the ball harder than anyone in the tournament, Emily takes an aggressive approach to any attempt she has to attack. Down two starters in the lineup, JCA will go as far as Emily takes them.
