Continue ReadingIt’s an interesting 4A semifinal between Fremd (36-4) and Wheaton-Warrenville South (WWS) (32-8) Friday, November 15, at 7 pm. This is a battle of the underdogs as they may not be favorites to win it all, but at this stage of the tournament, anyone left standing can win the title.
WWS has been looking for consistency in the lineup. No doubt, the talent is there and they are gelling at the right time. In 19 years, Bill Schreier has a 420-285 record and a trip to the final four in 2002 where they finished fourth in the state.
Fremd’s Coach Curt Pinley has a 504-259-5 record in 21 years of service. In 1987, Fremd made their only trip to the state championship finishing in fourth place overall in the 2A Division.
Players to watch:
Sarah Burau (2020, 6’0, S, Wheaton-Warrenville South)
One of the highest totals for assists in 2019, Sarah has dished out 884 sets successfully on the season.
Rian Baker (2022, 6’0, S, Fremd)
This team’s quarterback is a sophomore, so watch out for aggressive sets and athletic plays. Also, be on a lookout for intangibles such as leadership and experience in big games to play a factor in this outcome. Rian has experience with 557 assists on the season.
Lizzie Chiesa (2021, 5’9, OH, Wheaton-Warrenville South)
Consistent both as a hitter and as a defender, Lizzie tallied 200 kills and 229 digs in 2019.
Zayna Meyer (2020, 6’0, MH/RS, Wheaton-Warrenville South)
She has been their most consistent hitter. Zayna has a natural ability to make the play whether it’s a kill or a block. In 2019, She has 401 kills and 314 digs.
Breslen Reid (2020, 5-10, OH, Fremd)
The senior Reid, Breslen had 272 kills and 224 digs. Her kills were second on the team behind her sister.
Rylen Reid (2022, 6’0, OH, Fremd)
The younger Reid, amassed 422 kills and 226 digs, just two more passes than her older sister!
SIDEBAR: Fremd’s Baker and the Reid sisters will be rooting for BENET to face them (if they get there) in the finals. Why? Benet Head Coach Brad Baker and Assistant Coach Kyle Reid are their dads, respectively. Volleyball is truly a family affair!
