The girl’s program always was considered behind the successful men’s program, who has won and been in multiple state championships. Head Coach Bill Schrier was there for those victories. Now after 4 years on the girl’s side of the game, the WWS program has climbed the mountain: made the championship match. They still have to reach the peak of that mountain, as they fell in the final to Benet Academy, 25-12, 25-16.
A Mountain has more than one side; one face. Benet’s side of the mountain wasn’t easy either. Having to go through Waubonsie Valley, then two-time repeat state champ Marist in the state semifinal. Not an easy trip to the mountain top either. However, it seems their side of the mountain top was a little flatter.
The beginning of the match was a disaster for WWS as Benet climbed out to a 7-1 lead before the Wheaton-Warrenville South Tigers called a timeout. the Tigers gave up one more point before Benet went on another run. After a tough second timeout at 4-16, WWS came back and played a respectable and aggressive set that turned out to be too little too late as Benet won the first set, 25-12.
Benet was pushed through the first half of set two through 11-10. Then the first-set Benet showed up and went on a 10-0 run before Wheaton-Warrenville South scored again. The Redwings of Benet won the set 25-16, getting their fourth state title in the school’s history.
