Whether it be by geography or a past history, there are some interesting storylines to keep tabs on Tuesday night when teams compete for a spot int he Class 1A State Tournament.
Rematch of State Quarterfinals
Saari KuehlJanesville has made it a tradition ending their season at the state tournament and the past three years raising the states top trophy in Class 1A. They will see a familiar opponent in Gladbrook-Reinbeck, their first-round opponent from last year’s state tournament. Despite some losses to graduation for both teams, there are still parts from last year’s success that will be back. Saari Kuehl, the returning 1st Team All State outside hitter will be the big go to for GR. She can handle a high volume of swings and can score from any rotation on the court. Her experience and big game ability will be key for the Rebels. Janesville will be relying on a balanced attack and their do it all type setter in Gabby Gergen who is nearing 1,000 assists on the season.
Momentum At The Right Time
Tripoli has played a rigorous schedule and definitely has the tradition to go with it. They have the experience from the state tournament last year where they were in the final four and returning one of the top players in Class 1A in Zoe Semelroth, an Upper Iowa commit who has nearly 350 kills on the season. They will take on a familiar foe in Wapsie Valley, separated by 15 miles. These two teams have faced off twice in the past month with Wapsie winning both.
Newell-Fonda winning the 2019 Class 1A Basketball Title.A New Name To Know
Lisbon is on the verge of breaking their way to the state tournament and will take on Springville who has traditionally always been a force on the girls volleyball and basketball scene. Lisbon was in Class 2A last year and dropped their regional game to West Branch. With a strong Senior class, this could be the year for the Lions play down the road in Cedar Rapids.
Newell-Fonda Now Adding Volleyball To Success
Newell-Fonda is in the post season talk every year for basketball and softball. The Mustangs just keep producing top athletes in both. Now add volleyball to the list. They have three athletes with over 200 kills in Macy Sievers, Megan Morenz, and Ella Larsen. And go figure, these three athletes were on Newell-Fonda’s 27-0 state championship basketball team. They will take on Le Mars Gehlen Tuesday at Le Mars.
Southwest Iowa Strength
Council Bluffs St. Albert will take on Riverside at Tri-Center while Sidney will take on East Mills at Fremont-Mills. Southwest Iowa has always had a strong tradition of volleyball and these teams are no different. St. Albert might have one of the top all-around players in Class 1A in Allie Petry, a Junior with over 400 kills and has committed to Iowa State as a defensive specialist/libero. She plays for one of the top club teams in the country in Nebraska Elite. Sidney has been atop of the Class 1A rankings most of the year and have not lost to anyone in Class 1A all season.
