Tryouts were held this past Sunday and will continue this week and into the weekend. While most are excited to start up again, it is a difficult time for all involved. Here are our three takeaways from the best, worst day of the club season – TYROUT day.
It is one year – If you were one of the hundreds who left the gym feeling defeated, unappreciated, or even angry because you didn’t make the team you had hoped, remember this is just one year in your volleyball career. Don’t stew and stress over the minor details of why you were placed where you ended, instead, try to find the positive things: a new perspective, more playing time, better schedule, more affordable, etc. Use the season to reflect and improve as much as you can, so you won’t be left with same felling next year.
Coaches feel the pressure too – It is a difficult day for everyone involved! Players have the pressure to perform, parents feel anxious for for their daughters, and coaches want try and form the best teams possible. Remember the coaches have a tough job. It can be very overwhelming to form teams from a huge group of potential players. It takes time to give everyone chances to show what they can do. So if it seems like the tryouts drag on, remind yourself, each player deserves a look.
When it comes time for the coaches to make decisions, trust they are being as fair as possible. It is very difficult to be a coach and know your decisions will discourage many. They see the tears, they hear the whispers and it affects them too. The game of volleyball has become so competitive and coaches and players alike, have a hard job during tryouts. This is why so many refer to it as the worst, best day.
Hard work pays off – If you left tryouts making a team, it is OK to feel proud. You earned that spot and the staff saw something special in you. Be thankful for the opportunity and don’t forget the time and energy it took to get there. Also, the girl crying in the hall, would give anything to be in your spot. If you left not making a team (or the team you wished for), find another chance to play and put in more sweat and effort to grow as an athlete this club season.
Anyway you look at it, try-out day is rough, but you will get through it and hopefully have a wonderful club season!
