For others, it may be a case where they have only seen the superstars on video. And others? How do you stop a team with a well balanced attack where anyone can score points? Here are some players and combinations that Class 3A coaches will be looking to slow down for the regional finals
Kara Peter – Carroll-Kuemper
She has the size, strength, and athleticism. Above all, she has the experience being part of multiple state tournament teams for Kuemper which includes a state title last season. Peter has over 450 kills on the season and is also a big problem at the net when it comes to her block. The team trying to stop her is Humboldt who was a 3A regional finalist before falling to Osage. Get the Knights out of system where they can’t rely on Peter in the middle as well as clean passing to run a fast tempo offense to get the frontline out of position.
Alysen Dexter – Des Moines Christian
Megan Riddle – Des Moines Christian
Red Oak will have the task of trying to slow down this duo with Dexter and Riddle combining nearly 600 kills. Riddle will be one to keep tabs on everywhere on the court where she is also a top defender and option as a backrow attacker. DMC definitely has a roster full of multiple weapons where that would also include libero Caitlin Kellner and setter Moriah Prewitt.
Belle Weber – Union
The name “Weber” is going to be said quite a bit tonight when Union and Dike-New Hartford take the court in what will be one of the best matches in the Cedar Valley. Both squads have had the number one ranking at some point this season. DNH has Morgan Weber, the Wichita State commit, while Union has Junior, Belle Weber who has 450 kills this season. DNH will look to lockdown the outside for Belle Weber as well as stay in system to run a balanced attack while Morgan Weber can be extremely creative in finding ways to score points for the Wolverines.
Emma Schubert – Davenport Assumption
Ava Schubert – Davenport Assumption
The Schubert sisters have both ends of the pin covered. Emma is the dynamic Junior who brings a big swing on the left side, scoring points in the front and backrow while sister Ava, a Freshman brings a really high attack on the right side with a big left-handed swing. Well trained and experienced against top competition, Assumption is able to really able to score in multiple ways. These two will get their kills, but will the rest of the team catch fire and really be a force to slow down.
Martha Pace – West Liberty
Macy Daufeldt – West Liberty (Title Photo)
These two have been scoring points all season for the Comets and will be tough to stop with their ability to attack in multiple spots. They can line up on the pin or have even been able to attack out of the middle where they have options all over the court and can even run a slide with setter, Morgan Peterson. Serve West Liberty tough in order to force the Pace/Daufeldt duo to adjust their approach and there is much less of a chance for them scoring. Still, a strong attack for both of these athletes is going to be really tough to slow down.
Sommer Daniel – Tipton
Daniel is definitely one of those athletes you just have to pick your poison as to how she scores her points and how she helps others score points. She has so many intangibles in her game that she just finds a way to get it done. Whether it’s getting out to the pin to blast away, being a primary passer in serve receive, or stepping into set – there are so many ways she contributes for her team. Tipton will be going against Nevada who is on a major streak winning 18 of their past 19 matches.
