Francis Howell Central, Lafayette, Liberty & Nixa punched their ticket to the Final Four in Class 4 and there were some standout performances along the way.
All four teams will square off in a round-robin format on Friday with the top two teams facing each other in the title game on Saturday in Cape Girardeau. A third-place game will take place on Saturday, as well.
Who Stood Out:
MiddletonEntire Liberty Roster
Liberty first defeated Lee’s Summit West, then proceeded to slay the St. Teresa dragon on Saturday. It is the first time St. Teresa’s has not reached the Final Four since the 2013-2014 season. The Blue Jays collectively had 73 digs in the 3-set match. Seniors Emily Glaser and Elizabeth Stepp were simply not ready for their high school careers to end – and it showed as each had 17 digs in the match.
It was truly a team effort as junior Bailee Middleton (11 kills), sophomore Madison Corf (9 kills) and freshman Brooklyn Young (7 kills) all had the offense humming for Liberty. Middleton was on her game defensively, as well, with 17 digs. Look for them to surprise at state this weekend.
Entire Nixa Roster
Nixa avenged an early-season loss to Willard in the district final en route to the Final Four – and looked incredible doing it. Not only did they avenge that loss, they did so in convincing fashion – 25-17, 25-11. This is another team getting hot at the right time. Give a ton of credit to Sydney Golden, who distributed the ball wonderfully to her offense. But defense also wins championships and in just two sets, the Eagles managed 38 digs. Lexie Gregory (12) and Alexis Adams (9) combined for 21 of those. There is not a team in the Final Four who isn’t a contender, but Nixa put their name on top of the list with the statement win against Willard.
Brooke Borgmeyer – Outside Hitter, Lafayette
Borgmeyer did not play in the first match of the day against Oakville due to injury, but appeared in the quarterfinals against Cor Jesu and was dynamic. The senior outside had 12 kills. Borgmeyer will play at the next level at Spring Hill College.
Kayla Steinmeyer – Outside Hitter, Howell Central
Steinmeyer has been an offensive spark for the Spartans all season, so it is no surprise she led her team to the Final Four – and did so in dominating fashion. Central defeated rival Howell 25-16, 25-17 and an hour later solidified their place at the Show-Me Center with a win against Hickman 25-12, 25-23. Steinmeyer was fantastic on Saturday with 18 kills and 15 digs.
