After attending and covering the Prep Dig 250 Expo in LaVista, NE a couple of weeks ago, here are some reasons why you should or encourage others interested in the next level to attend the fantastic event in the future:
Exposure: Obviously this is one of the main reasons for the event. It is a great way for a host of coaches from a variety of college levels to get a look at athletes. It was great because it was a mixture of ages as well. Freshman were with seniors, etc. During the Expo a variety of skills were on showcase too. I really liked how mini games were used to showcase the all around skills of the athletes. There was very little position only showcasing. The mini games gave you a good picture of what the athletes could do as far as being an all around player. It also stretched some comfort zones of athletes, too. The 4 vs. 4 or 2 vs. 2 games gave opportunities for lots of touches for all players. Coaches could evaluate lots of different athletes in a variety of drills as players rotated from different courts. If you are on the fence about the next level you could play at, this gives you good feedback and gauge how you rate. Anyone working at the event would be willing to give you some specific feedback or opinions on what you need to improve on.
Building Volleyball Community: It was really fun to see athletes from all over the state and varying class levels compete together in two short hours. I could really start to see some chemistry and connection start to occur between hitters and setters as well. The ability of all the athletes to be able to become great teammates right away showed how great the IQ and love of volleyball is here in the state of Nebraska.
Networking: As I looked up into where the parents were watching their daughters, I saw lots of families visiting with each other from all across Nebraska. I often thought about what if their daughters ended up going to the same college, then they would already have some sort of relationship to help with that transition. Networking also helps to grow continuity and a community of volleyball families. This helps to grow the sport across all levels!
Fun: This should be what it is all about right? Why do athletes play volleyball in the first place because it is fun! When I used to ask my players in their pre-season goal sheets to list their top 3 to 5 reasons they play volleyball, fun was always on that list. I loved seeing all the smiles on the athletes faces. They seemed to be really enjoying themselves and each other. A parent reached out to me after the event and said her daughter had a fantastic experience.
