Continue ReadingIt’s been a productive couple of years for Five:1 Athletics and the club program is seeing itself take a big jump up to 30 squads for the 2020 club season.
While still a young program that continues to develop, Five:1 has shown an ability to compete in state and regional competition with eyes on taking the next step this year.
Here’s a look at the top squads Five:1 will be fielding this club season.
18 BLACK
Olivia ErwinCoached by Heather Seegraves, this team doesn’t have a lot of size, but should be able to make up for it with fundamentals and passing. Taylor Linz (Arkansas Ft. Smith) is a great court general at setter that will help this team overcome its issues with size. The team also has a lot of solid passing options in the back row. Maddie Weiss (Shepherd) and Olivia Erwin (Jefferson) are two experienced liberos that have seen their fair share of big hitters to defend. Caitlyn Pistro (SVSU) is a do-everything option for the squad that can play libero or the outside. Standing just 5-foot-7, Pistro is a player that plays well beyond her size and is capable of finishing anywhere on the net. Milla Sherman (Rollins College), Maddy House (Northwood), Olivia Francis and Gaby Clark are also outside options, while Kiana Martens (Northwood) can play middle and outside for 18 Black. Zoe Rhines is also a solid option in the middle for the squad.
17 BLACK
Sydney HasenfratzCoached by Eric Lazowski, Five:1 is excited about this group. It will actually be led by a Class of 2020 player in setter Mariah Brenz (Albion), who is a young grad this summer and is eligible to play with the 17’s. She provides a lot of experience and leadership and will be joined by Peyton Miller at setter. Anna Marshall is a steady libero that has great passing ability and is joined in the back row by Ally Lasley. Sage Kissman had a great prep season for Mason on the outside and her ability to play six rotations will go a long way for the team. Emma McIlhargie and Mason Gebhardt are also on the outside, with Gebhardt being a Class of 2022 player. In the middle, the team is loaded with talent behind Sage Schumacher, Sydney Sahr and Sydney Hasenfratz. This team has high hopes, playing Open level all season. It should definitely raise the game of all the players and bring some positive results at the end of the club season.
16 BLACK
This squad will be coached by Tiffany Sayles and has a lot of new club members making up the roster. Size will be an issue with this team as well, but they hope to make up for it with their athleticism. Alli Hawk and Rachel Rochon will have a big role in the back row to try and help this team overcome their size. Their serve receive and passing will be a key to the club season. Gillian Jones and Estella Seguin will be the setting options and also be vital to the success of the team. On the outside, 16 Black has a lot of options behind a versatile group comprised of Jersey Scott, Blair Wilson, Sydney Rudicil and Haley Cain. Wilson is a Class of 2023 player that made a real impact as a freshman for Mt. Morris this fall. In the middle, Adrianna Mileski and Korah Honig will be nice options for Sayles to turn to. This will definitely be a total-team effort for 16 Black to reach their goals, but they are certainly within reach.
15 BLACK
This group remains intact from last year’s 14’s squad that won the Michiana Power League 14 Open Division. That gives coach Kari Carnell a lot of optimism about what they can do in 2020. Team chemistry should be a strength and setter Jenna Sayles knows her hitters well. Ava Olrich will be there at setter when needed, as well. Sayles has some great hitting options to go with in Montgomery Rotter, Makayla Neelands, Ashlee Lehnard, Abbi Peterson, Taylor Schram and Nicole Sisk. In the back, Kendall White is a 2023 libero that really seems to be on the verge of breaking out. She and Abby Buttigieg give Five:1 a solid defense to compliment the attack.
