We have seen some positive things early on from the club in the 2020 season, but here’s a closer look at the Red squads they are sending to the court this year.
18-Red
Led by veteran coach Joe Podvin, 18-Red is coming off a bumpy showing at the Rock ‘n Rumble last week where it went 1-4 in the 18 Open. However, most sets were competitive and good things should be ahead. TeamD has some really nice length and athleticism at the net this year. Delaney Lambert, Kennedy Chastang, Shelby Dundas (Heidelberg), Zoe Knaus, Alexandra Montgomery (Ithaca College), Riley O’Connell (Lawrence Tech) and Jordan Turner are all capable hitters that have the ability to play in the middle and on the outside. Chloe Vestergard is the lone Class of 2021 player on the roster. The Hartland setter will run the offense and feed all of these hitting options. In the back row, 18-Red has some composed players in Carly Rodman (Rochester College) and McKenna Pfeffer. Pfeffer is coming off a run with Skyline to the Division 1 state semifinals, facing a number of top hitters in the state along the way.
17-Red
David Nichols heads up this squad of nine juniors and one sophomore. 17-Red is coming off a promising showing at the Rock ‘n Rumble, placing 19th in the 17 Open with a 3-3 match record and 7-7 set record. After dropping its first three matches, it ran the table in the Bronze bracket to come home with a tournament crown. The lone Class of 2022 member is setter Julia Mills, who comes into the program from Carleton Airport. Like 18-Red, 17-Red has a lot of players that can move to different positions. Hitters Catherine Dobies, Lindsay Hubler, Milan Lee, Madison Grace, Makenzie Keck, Madison McGraw and Ryan Tolbert can all hit on the outside and most could see time in the middle. Players like Dobies, Lee and McGraw can also help out in the back row if needed. The team has some very capable passers in the back in Miah Scarchilli and Jaydin Nowak. Team Detroit looks to have the hitting here and they can really get on some nice runs. The key will be not letting opponents do the same. They had a few too many runs against them last weekend.
16-Red
Brian Coughenour coaches this young squad of nine sophomores and one freshman. They are coming off an 11th-place finish in the 16 Open of the Rock ‘n Rumble, putting them in position to be a contender among the region this year. They qualified for the gold bracket and were a little outmatched there, but still played Adidas Kiva 16 Red to three sets. The lone setter is Kate Collingsworth, who comes from the talent SMCC program that won the Division 3 state championship this fall. She gets to work with some great hitters all year and that is certainly the case here. Ellia Sechrist is a powerful outside that sits inside our top 20 for the Class of 2022 rankings. She is joined on the outside by Katie Belaire and Elizabeth Vance. Vance can also play on the right side alongside Angelina Stojcev and Janiah Jones. Jones can also play the middle with Paige Geiser and Erin Morrisey. In the back row, 16-Red has Amelia Scarchilli and lone freshman, Lauren Heming. Heming was second in digs on a talented Marian squad. There’s a lot of potential for this team and I am excited to see how far they can progress.
15-Red
Derek Ledwidge will head up this squad of all Class of 2023 talents. The group had its bumpy moments last weekend, finishing 21st in the 15 Open of the Rock ‘n Rumble, but they won two of their final three matches and had their last loss go three sets with Unified 15-1. This team has a lot from the Lakes Valley Conference area with OH/RS Alexis Barber coming from Milford, MB Isabella Harding and DS/L Olivia Bonkowski coming from Walled Lake Northern and DS/L Kennedy Hudson coming over from Lakeland. They also have a Clarkston connection with MB McKenna Hampton and OH Kendall Lozzi. Hitters Ayla Dunbar and Stella Day join the mix alongside setters Laney Burns and Braedy Wineman. The 15 Opens look like they will be highly competitive this year, especially amongst Michigan teams. It can be easy to get lost in the shuffle, but I expect Team Detroit to find their way and be in the mix for top five in the state.
