While there were a few hiccups along the way, the level of play improved from Saturday into Sunday. During these initial matches, coaches often depend on their setters to lead the way and call the shots. Here are 10 of the best setters from the Mizuno M1 Elite scrimmage:
Cameron Berger Vital Volleyball 16-1’s : At 5’10” this freshmen setter looked confident when setting for a strong 16’s team. Her quick release to the outside gave her hitters an advantage against their blockers. Although being the youngest on what looks to be a promising team, Berger served well and ran the offense like a pro.
Hannah Hanson SMV 16 Black: Another freshman, from Rochester Mayo, with a lot of potential. You may not realize she is a setter for the elite, black level team, because she is also used as a hitter. She sets in the back row and can be found hitting in the front rotations. Sometimes she stays on the right-side and others she attacks out of the middle. She was a starter for the Spartans and will be the primary setter next year as senior Kelly Klees (SMV 18-1) graduates.
Kennedi Orr NL 17-1: The Star Tribune 2019 Metro Player of the Year and the 2019 Pioneer Press East Metro Volleyball Player of the Year needs no introduction. However, this was the first and last time you will catch her and the 17-1’s in Rochester. The crowd that gathered to see her, was entertained as she commanded her team with energy and perfection. The Eagan junior will head to Unvi. of Nebraska after she graduates in 2021, but until then she will continue to dominate the intensive NL schedule from Kansas, to Denver, Texas and Florida.
Teagan Starkey MN Select 17-1: Another who’s reputation is well known to most, Starkey is 5’11” setter from Lakeville. Still uncommitted, although we anticipate she is narrowing her options down, it was a great chance for a others to be exposed to such a skilled player. They took on some new competition from Iowa: Iowa Rockets and Six Pack.
Sara Luong M1 18-1: Young setters out there saw proof that you don’t have to be 6′ to be a top setter despite the new desire for “tall” setters. At 5’9” Sara showed she can play as big as any. It also helped having a team full of top recruits, many whom will stay close to home. She makes it look easy and fun. After catching a game or two of hers, and everyone wants to try and be a setter!
Other top setters include:
- Mikaila Winward Vital Volleyball 18-1 (William Penn Univ. commit)
- Jasmine Weidemann M1 17-1
- Elle Cotton MN Select 16-1
- DonnaMae Smith MN North 18-1
