This will be a highly competitive tournament where this Penguins team can show what they are made of. This is a unique team, pulling from high schools as far southwest as East Troy and as far north as Brown Deer.
When these athletes step on the court they get to work. While the team does have firepower, their true strength lies in its defense and serve receive. They are a very defense-heavy team with Claudia Biebel and Bree Pollich out of Pewaukee and Jennifer Her, from the other side of the Woodland Conference, who was the varsity defensive specialist at Brown Deer this year.
Their pin hitters, Ellie Richmond, Ericka Schell, and Alyssa Murry are also strong on defense. They have some great shots on offense and know when to turn the power on or make a controlled tip or swing. These pin hitters are dynamic and are strong overall athletes.
Setters Sydney Heinzelmann and Kelli Brabson move fast to the ball and are not afraid to take risks on their sets. Their smart choices will be a huge asset to this team as they develop a presence on the court throughout the season.
The tough job of playing middle goes to Melissa Cunningham, Tarra Mikes, and Cass Luedtke. Cass can also swing on the pins. The chemistry of these middles with the setters and even the pins on blocking will keep the power going on this defensively strong team.
What stands out most about each and every one of these athletes is their love of the game. You can tell that they just want to play and will work hard every moment they are on the court. A team with this amount of potential and heart can go a long way throughout the length of the season and their first challenge will be this weekend at the Resolution Tournament.
This Penguins team will face off against some other solid teams in the region including RVA G18 Navy, FC Elite 17 Navy, FC Elite Flyers 18-White, and 1W Bay 17 Momentum in pool play with the potential to play a wide range of other talented teams on Sunday.
Prep Dig will be providing coverage the entire weekend so stay tuned for more on your favorite teams and athletes!
