Continue ReadingThe right side player has a difficult role on a team. Duties include: setting the block, attacking from an odd angle, staying out of the way of the setter, and not getting the same opportunities as others. While more teams are following trend and utilizing these typically tall, talented players, they still tend to see less court time, fewer sets, and less recognition than their peers. For example, our own rankings for the class of 2021 has only 12 true right sides on the list. That is approximately 8%. So this club season, be sure to recognize those grinding on the right side and make sure they know their value to your team. Here are a few “model” right-side players to watch.
Elise Rossing Crossfire
This 6’1 right side from Maple Grove had a great high school. Whether she is on the left or ride side, she makes her presence known. She had a game high 17 kills in their match against Elk River and added 11 in their section final vs. Osseo. She always finds a way to get involved in the action.
Sophie Kobienia Kandi Elite
Another tall, strong right side, Kobienia plays for Willmar high school. This year she will be on the 17-2’s team for KEVC. That is not to say she couldn’t be on the 17-1’s team, but Kandi seems to do a good job of balancing out their talent among teams. Look for her to be a key part of the team’s offense. The team will have strong chemistry with two others from Willmar: Callie Slagter a 5’6” libero with a lot of spunk and hustle and Knofczynski another six-footer who will likely play middle for the team.
Lauren Crowl MN Northern Lights
At 6’4” it is hard to believe this athletic junior hasn’t been snatched up by a collegiate program looking to add size to their roster. As hitter for Eastview high school, she had a handful of matches where she contributed 15+ kills to their effort. Her time spent at Northern Lights has helped her to become a physical specimen drawing attention whenever she steps on the court. This will be a great club season for her as she has gained more muscle and foot speed. The potential for her to be a strong Division I athlete is high. Look for Lauren and her team to be one of the top in the nation this club season.
Taryn Tacheny Minnesota Volleyball Academy (MVA)
Taryn has been playing for the Irondale Varsity since she was in ninth grade. Although her team struggled in 2019, this versatile, athletic player will have her chance to experience success as a part of the MVA program on their 17 Elite team. She can play both outside and right-side. She adds a big vertical to her 5’10” frame.
Mackenzie Vycital Vital Volleyball
This dynamic player, who has already committed to play for Michigan Tech, will continue to develop her offensive skills this club season. She was a key player for New Prague high school brings creates huge plays on both sides of the court. She is in the top 50 recruits for the class of 2021.
