That moment an athlete rises with their head and shoulders above the top of the tape can be magical and awe inspiring regarding the athleticism required and the potential these attributes can instantly bring to any squad. With the women’s net set slightly above 7’4″ inches, a 10 foot touch is significant given the near three feet of clearance from the top of the net to the athlete’s max reach. The simple visual measure in most gyms is whether or not the athlete can touch a standard basketball rim that hangs at 10′ high. Of course, just touching 10′ or above does not qualify an athlete as an elite prospect, nor does it mean that an attacking athlete needs to be touching 10′ in order to be considered an elite top-program prospect. Volleyball is a very technical game with experience needed to understand spacing, timing, and all the nuances that come with strategy on both sides of the ball. Simply put, regarding these high flyers, it very much matters what one can do up there once they elevate. Needless to say, touching 10 feet and beyond can be considered a rarity when you think about the volume of female volleyball athletes competing in the sport. Adding athletes that can reach these heights can be a big bonus to the composition of any team roster.
As not all MN athletes that can reach 10′ are represented below, here are a handful of athletes in the state with recorded approach jump touches at 10′ or higher.
