Continue ReadingWith arriving this weekend there will be a lot of action across various facilities in the greater Minneapolis area. With a lot of action scheduled, including the best of the best representing several Minnesota clubs, this is a great time to see some of the depth among the class of 2023. Here are seven athletes to watch this weekend.
Cameron Berger – 5’10 | S | Vital Volleyball 16-1 Gold – Berger seemingly gets better upon every competitive experience as her confidence and command as a setter are elevating and providing great leadership for her team. She is playing up an age group for this Vital Volleyball team that includes some dynamic attackers.
Mya Cinnamo – 5’9 | OH | Northern Lights 15-2 – Cinnamo has some great explosiveness off the court to get up and on the ball with a consistently high contact point at the peak of her jump. A Rosemount varsity contributor, she has good upside and range to her game as a pin attacker from both sides of the floor and provides a veteran-like competitive mindset.
Annika Forbes – 5’5 | L/OH | M1 16-1 – The New Life Academy product is playing up an age group for M1’s tope 16’s team. She has good first contact skills. What is maybe most impressive is her ability to contribute at the net with great elevation and arm control in spite of being undersized at 5’5.
Liesl Haugen – 5’8 | DS/L | MN Select 15-1 – Haugen is a good libero on this squad as she has good length at 5’8 to cover the floor with range in her pursuit of the ball. She sees the play development well and is simple in her read and reaction to the ball coming over the net that helps her make impactful plays through the first contact.
Ava Mueller – 5’11 | OH | KEVC 15-1 – Another freshman that played a key role for her high school team as she helped Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa to the class A state tournament. She has good size and is developing her assertiveness as well as arm control and power to be a key point producer for this squad.
Kayli Starkey – 5’8 | S/RS | MN Select 15-1 – Starkey is an athlete. She provides a good competitive punch along with versatility to set the offense as well as ability to score points from the pins as an attacker with good lift off the floor. As a lefty this adds a great dimension to her game that combined with her effort and energy is a big asset for this group.
Ireland Stassen – 5’7 | S | KEVC 15-1 – Stassen was a big get for this KEVC squad given her competitive experience that grew and grew over the course of the high school season as a setter for class A power and 2019 state champion Minneota. She is simple in her fundamentals and provides good leadership as the floor general while executing with good touch and location through both pins.
