Petry, who led the St Albert Saintes to a 24-10 record and a State semifinal appearance in 2019, had 446 kills, 31 aces, 268 digs, and 31 blocks. She played this winter with Nebraska Elite.
After graduating from high school, Petry will continue her volleyball and academic career with Iowa State University. When asked why Iowa State won her over, Petry said, “I loved the campus and the atmosphere there. I also chose Iowa State for volleyball because the coaches have created a family-like bond with the girls and I love the way they coach the team. They just made it a place I want to spend four years.”
What are you most looking forward to this next high school season?
“One thing I am most looking forward to this next fall is playing with and in front of people I have grown up with for the past 11 years. Another thing I am most looking forward to is playing one more season with Coach Lantz. After 3 high school seasons and 1 club season when I was 13, this will be the last time I will be a player for Coach Lantz and it is a bittersweet feeling. She has pushed me every day in practice and has shaped me into the player and person I am today.”
What is the biggest life lesson volleyball has taught you?
“I think the biggest life lesson I have learned is to never take a single thing for granted because you never know when something could be your last. The summer before my freshman year I, unfortunately, hurt my back pretty bad and I continued to play on it for a couple of months, thinking it would just go away. About 4 games into playing high school volleyball, I was unable to continue to play because I had 2 fractures in my back. My family and I weren’t sure if I was going to be able to continue to play volleyball, but thankfully after a long few weeks in a back brace and an amazing physical therapist, I was back playing earlier than expected. So, after that experience, I never looked at playing volleyball the same.”
Now that you don’t have school or club practice, how are you spending your days?
“I was planning on running track for my school, so right now I’m doing workouts for that and trying to keep up on school work. I’m also at home every day with my sister, Lexie Petry, and we usually try to find something fun to do each day. We usually spend our day watching All American on Netflix and playing ping pong in our basement.”
The number one advice you would give to an incoming freshman volleyball player this fall?
“I think the biggest thing would to always work hard and to have fun while you are in high school because it goes extremely fast. I feel like it was yesterday that I was going to be a freshman playing with my sister (a senior) and it was the scariest thing ever. I am now going into my senior season and its crazy how fast time goes in high school. One more thing I would tell them is to always work for a spot on the court, even if you are only playing freshman or playing varsity, every spot a person gets is earned.”
If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you choose and why?
“The one place I have always wanted to go visit is Maui, Hawaii. I have never been to Hawaii and it looks super pretty, so that is somewhere I have always wanted to go. I also have never been scuba diving or parasailing, so something new like that would be fun to do.”
