I have scouted so many girls this club season, watching them develop their skills, grow personally, and get better. I am really looking forward to seeing how they do at the regional tournament this weekend. Below is a sneak peek at some of the girls to watch from Southwest Iowa, and other locations if I have seen them play in person, to watch out for this weekend.
SWI Third Degree 18 Black
Coach: Samantha Bohnet
Elaina Bohnet Elaina Bohnet 5'10" | OH Council Bluffs Lincoln | 2020 State IA – (Abraham Lincoln High School/IWCC)
Elaina is a senior outside hitter who was an integral part of the run to state last fall for Abraham Lincoln High School and who is committed to Iowa Western Community College next fall. Her stats were 3.83 KPS, a .922 serve efficiency with 30 aces, 3.47 DPS, and 43 total blocks. She is hard to defend and it should be interesting to see her show off her skills at regionals. As I have heard opponents say after playing Elaina, she is a nightmare for her opponents. She really does have it all on the court and is coached by her sister and former Creighton stand-out, Samantha Bohnet.
Samantha Christiansen Samantha Christiansen 5'6" | S Council Bluffs Lincoln | 2020 State IA – (Abraham Lincoln High School/Midland University)
Sam is a setter that propelled her Abraham Lincoln High School team to the state tournament last fall. She had a .987 serve efficiency with 25 aces, 9.58 APS, 3.75 DPS, and 30 total blocks during her last high school season. Sam has a really high volleyball IQ and the ability to turn missed opportunities into points.
Delaney Esterling Delaney Esterling S Lewis Central | 2020 State IA – (Lewis Central/IWCC)
Delaney is an outside hitter from Lewis Central High School who is committed to play at Iowa Western Community College next fall with teammate, Elaina Bohnet Elaina Bohnet 5'10" | OH Council Bluffs Lincoln | 2020 State IA . Her stats last fall were 3.19 KPS, .861 serve efficiency with 64 aces, and 27 total blocks. She is a threat and should be on full display this weekend.
Rachel Cushing, SWI Third Degree.Rachel Cushing – (Lewis Central)
Rachel is a DS/L from Lewis Central High School whose stats last fall were .983 serve efficiency with 19 aces, 67 assists, and 4.63 DPS, the highest for her high school team. She is very quick and does not give up.
Rachel Weitzke – (Fremont Mills)
Rachel is an outside hitter/DS for her high school team, Fremont Mills. Her stats last fall were 3.04 KPS, .904 serve efficiency with 21 aces, 2.13 d DPS, and 8 total blocks. She is another player with a high volleyball IQ and seems to be in the right place at the right time defensively.
Delaney Demman – (Omaha Central/Webster University)
Delaney is a setter from Omaha Central and her stats last season were .898 serve efficiency with 38 aces, 6.7 APS, 2.6 DPS, and 7 blocks. She is useful everywhere on the court and will surely help her club team at regionals.
Kayla Schliefman Kayla Schliefman MB Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln | 2021 State IA – (Abraham Lincoln 2021)
Kayla is a junior at Abraham Lincoln High School and was instrumental in helping her high school team go to state last fall. She is a middle blocker and her stats last fall were 2.5 KPS with .429 efficiency and 114 total blocks. That means if she is going up to hit almost half the time she will get a kill. Those are a lot of blocks as well. In other words, she is really good at her job for her team and I would expect the same from her at the regional tournament.
Peyton Preston – (Omaha Central)
Peyton is an outside hitter/right-side hitter from Omaha Central. She had 2.5 KPS, .922 serve efficiency with 35 aces, 2.3 DPS, and 19 total blocks.
Madisyn Havermann – (Lewis Central)
Madi is a junior at Lewis Central High School whose stats last fall were 1.36 KPS, .924 serve efficiency with 41 aces, and the most blocks on her team with 78.
Jadyn Achenbach – (Riverside)
Jadyn is a tough right-side hitter from Riverside High School whose stats last fall were 2.63 KPS, .845 serve efficiency with 44 aces, 1.89 DPS, and 22 total blocks. She was the top hitter for her high school team and will be an instrumental member of her club team’s performance at regionals.
WCI FusionWest Central Iowa Fusion 18s
Sophie Badding Sophie Badding 5'11" | MB Carroll-Kuemper | 2023 State IA – (2023, Kuemper Catholic High School)
Sophie is a freshman middle hitter from Kuemper Catholic High School who started all 115 sets on their run to the state runner-up spot at state last fall. Sophie has a 3.63 GPA and also plays basketball. She is a force in the middle for her club team and is definitely one to keep your eye on at this regional tournament.
Emma McKinney, 2020, WCI Fusion.Emma McKinney – (South Central Calhoun)
Emma is an OH/all-around player for South Central Calhoun whose stats last season were 3.2 KPS, .863 serve efficiency with 70 aces, 4.22 APS, 1.98 DPS, and 27 total blocks. Wow…that is really a 6-rotation player. I was told that South Central Calhoun is so small that they ran a 6-2 with Emma and the next player below, freshman Riley Batta Riley Batta 5'7" | OH South Central Calhoun | 2023 State IA , with each of them setting opposite of each other from the back row and playing OH across the front row. That is some seriously creative maneuvering to make the most of what you have.
Riley Batta Riley Batta 5'7" | OH South Central Calhoun | 2023 State IA – (2023, South Central Calhoun)
Riley is a freshman OH/all-around player for South Central Calhoun whose stats last season were 2.62 KPS, .915 serve efficiency with 37 aces, 4.14 APS, 1.92 DPS, and 38 total blocks. Very impressive for a freshman, 6-rotation player.
West Central Iowa Fusion and Southwest Iowa Third Degree have met at least twice this season and are in the same pool at the regional tournament. It will again be an interesting match between two teams loaded with talent and is definitely a match-up to see.
