The current crop of sophomores are transitioning into upperclassmen next fall and starting to get the spotlight really turned on them over the next 12 months.
A strong club season in 2020 can really propel them up ranking boards and draw more college attention. Here’s 10 players that aren’t quite household names yet, but are poised to breakout soon.
Lyse Bates – L/DS, Portage Northern/Dead Frog
Bates is in the Class of 2022, but has been playing up in age level throughout her volleyball career. A starting libero for Portage Northern, Bates also is the starting libero for 18 Black at Dead Frog, facing against Class of 2020 and 2021 hitters on a regular basis. Bates is taking those challenges head on and performing at a very high level. Dead Frog is doing quite well in the Michigan Open Power League and Bates is a big part of that. Her consistency in the back row allows the team to stay in-system and finish with their talented hitters.
Cari Bohm – MB, Ann Arbor Huron/Legacy
This is a big club year for Bohm, who has been very unlucky with injuries during the prep season and hasn’t had a chance to really establish herself at Huron because of it. However, the 6’4” middle has all the potential in the world and a few years to still grow before getting to the next level. Her size puts her in an elite class and now she’s working on becoming that go-to finisher and really using that length to her advantage. As Bohm is able to stay on the floor consistently, she is going to become a big name in the class.
Mackenzie DelacherMackenzie Delacher – S, Rockford/FaR Out
Delacher is a very familiar name in Rockford and Mackenzie is doing her part to build on that legacy. As a sophomore, she was the starting setter for a Rams team that worked in a lot of new pieces this fall. She’s put up close to 1,200 assists and is building off that this club season for 16 Red. Delacher doesn’t lack in confidence and leadership, which is what you like to see out of a young setter. She certainly has volleyball in her blood.
Jacoby Flynn – L/DS, Rochester Adams/Legacy
The Class of 2022 players can still see some change in position at the club level and that is the case with Flynn. She has previously played setter and was the starting setter at Adams this past fall, but Legacy has her moving to libero and the new position is fitting nicely. Flynn took on the challenge with a positive attitude and it has produced positive results. She’s already garnering some D1 interest and has a lot of room to grow.
Amanda Glanton – MH, Davison/Michigan Elite
Glanton is another long middle in this class that has a lot of potential. She looks like she is ready to break out and really become draw the attention of Division 1 programs over the next six months. Glanton stands 6’3” and has plenty of varsity experience at Davison already and is competing with some of the best in the nation right now as part of 16 Mizuno at Michigan Elite. Her footwork and finishing ability seem to get better with each day.
Katie Luurtsema – OH, Grand Rapids South Christian/FaR Out
Luurtsema is having a really strong club year for 16 Red thus far and is showing the all-around skills you want to see in a go-to outside hitter and a leader. As she continues to raise her game and develop more confidence, Luurtsema should really hit the next gear. In a talent-heavy Grand Rapids-area, look for Luurtsema to be one of the names to emerge over the next two years.
Sierra Nauseida – L/DS, Grand Rapids Catholic Central/MVA
Nauseida is part of a talented libero group in this class and she has the varsity experience that will help set her apart from others in time. Nausieda has already competed against a lot of the best hitters in the Grand Rapids area and that should sharpen her skills for a breakout 2020. She is taking on a lot of talented hitters while in the back row for MVA this club season as well.
Amina Robinson – L/DS, Mercy/Michigan Elite
Robinson is in the midst of a big breakout season. She won a highly-competitive battle for the libero position at Mercy and helped guide the Marlins to a state championship this past fall in Division 1. Now she is building on that with a great club year for 16 Elite. Robinson has a great eye for the court and has the speed and quickness to get to the ball in good position. Her instincts have been built by competing against some great hitters over the last year.
Ellia SechristEllia Sechrist – OH, Walled Lake Central/Team Detroit
Sechrist may not be as under the radar as others, as she has shown the ability to shoulder the load at a young age already. She has been a go-to arm for Walled Lake Central as a freshman and sophomore and is now trying to bring Team Detroit 16 Red to a breakout year in the Midwest. Sechrist is a six-rotation option that has shown improved passing, blocking and serving each year and is only going to get better from here. Her experience at the varsity level has provided her with a confidence and fearlessness you want to see in a college prospect.
Rayne Thompson – OH/MH, Whitehall
Thompson is a little under the radar because she is a multi-sport athlete that also competes at a high level in basketball. Thompson really shined this fall for Whitehall, leading the team in kills by a wide margin. She doesn’t have the size of other hitters in this class, but she is a gamer. Her competitive fire is going to take her far on the hardwood. I am excited to see what her junior season will bring.
