With each passing month, it is becoming more clear that the Class of 2023 could be something really special in the state of Michigan. While you have heard us talk about some of the big names, here’s a closer look at 10 players you need to keep an eye on as well.
Jacey Anama – OH, East Kentwood/FaR Out
Anama is definitely an under the radar option for the Class of 2023, but the 15 Red outside hitter has really taken off this club season for FaR Out. Anama has shown the ability to finish consistently while developing a reliable passing game as well. She looks like she is set to really breakout next fall on the prep scene as part of East Kentwood’s program.
Stella Day – MH/OH, St. Catherine/Team Detroit
Day played alongside fellow Class of 2023 standout Megan Grose Megan Grose 5'10" | S St. Catherine | 2023 State MI at St. Catherine Academy this fall on the varsity squad and was able to hold her own as middle/outside. Her blocking ability measured up with anyone in the Class, as she put up over 150 blocks in the 2019 fall season. That has continued for Team Detroit 15 Red this club season. As Day continues to develop her finishing skills at the net to combine with her nose for blocking, she will become a dominant middle.
Olivia Gardner Olivia Gardner 6'2" | MB Dakota | 2023 State MI – MH/OH, Macomb Dakota/Michigan Elite
Gardner started as just a middle for Michigan Elite 15 Mizuno this club season, but she has been able to move around and play the outside as well. Gardner has turned into a real go-to player for them this year and has progressed very rapidly in the early months of the club season. That should bode well for Dakota, where she had a standout season with the junior varsity squad.
Paige Giehtbrock – OH, Clarkston/Legacy
The Clarkston volleyball program has been developing some young talent in recent seasons and they seem to have another player with a lot of potential on their hands in Giehtbrock. The 5’11” outside saw some time with the varsity squad this fall and it’s propelled her into a great start in her club season with 15-2 Adidas at Legacy. Giehtbrock is turning into a six-rotation player that has really strong passing skills. Her ceiling is high as she continues to improve in all aspects of the game.
Kaitlyn Hoffman – L/DS, Clarkston/Legacy
The Legacy 15-1 Adidas squad is obviously having a tremendous start to the 2020 club season and a big reason for that comes from the play of Hoffman, who is very much an unsung hero in the back row. Her ability to pass and serve receive has allowed Legacy to stay in-system and the ball to their finishers on the outside. Hoffman has moved around positions between club and high school, but really is shining at libero right now.
Ella Schomer Ella Schomer 6'0" | RS Marian | 2023 State #142 Nation MI – RS, Marian/Michigan Elite
Schomer is a left-handed option on the right side for Michigan Elite and Marian. The buzz on her is strong as she has done a great job of finishing her attacks. Schomer is a player that is putting in a lot of extra time working on her game and it is showing up in matches. She’s already made great strides in the first few months of the club season and should continue to grow exponentially for the remaining months of the season.
Taylor Stephens – OH, Okemos/FaR Out
Okemos had a pretty young lineup this season and Stephens was one of the standout freshmen for the Chieftains, earning All-Region honors in the process. She took part in every aspect of the game and showed great poise for a freshman. Now, she is sharpening her skills with FaR Out and is ready to show she isn’t under the radar, but one of the top players in this class overall.
Kendall White – L/DS, St. Johns/Five:1
White is already garnering a lot of valuable experience on the court as a freshman. She was thrown into the fire right away, earning the starting libero spot for St. Johns this past fall and playing well enough to be named All-Region. Now, she is doing more of the same for Five:1 this club season. White has a competitive fire you don’t see from a lot of freshmen and is getting better with each set. Her serve is coming along and will make her an even more impactful player soon.
Blair Wilson – OH, Mt. Morris/Five:1
Wilson is another freshman that was able to make a name for herself during the prep season, earning All-Region honors as an outside for Mt. Morris. This club season, she is playing up in age as part of 16 Black at Five:1 Athletics. All of this experience playing against older competition is going to definitely pay off for her and make her a mentally tough outside. As her skills continue to develop, Wilson is sure to be a name to keep an eye on.
Corrie Wisser Corrie Wisser 5'10" | S Hopkins | 2023 State MI – S, Hopkins/MVA
Wisser is a complete athlete that showcases her skills from the setter position. She was the starter at Hopkins this fall and earned All-Region honors and is now taking that successful fall into club season with MVA 15 Black. Wisser has a great vertical, which can help her make plays that other setters her age can’t. She reads the court well and knows when to call her own number. Wisser’s volleyball IQ is going to be a real asset in the years to come.
