While it’s often the Libero that starts a rally by receiving a serve or shot and it’s just as likely that very same play will be finished by an Outside Hitter, it’s the Setter that transfers that hope into opportunity from one player to the next.
That’s if the opposition can get the ball past the Middle Blocker. Here in Michigan in 15U action those two positions have proven to be as important as any. Without quality play from Setters and Middle Blockers alike the idea of team chemistry would fall by the wayside. Mayhem would rule instead and the format those individuals worked so hard to create would be gone and the game wouldn’t be better off for it.
Across the state there are numerous players coming up in 15U competition at Middle Blocker and Setter, some of which will help make up the next generation of college athletes, such as…
REESE MICHALSKI
Being five-foot-10 is just one reason this right-hander is such a formidable Middle Blocker for Attack Volleyball 15U National Black. Merge that with an Approach Jump of 109 inches, a Standing Reach of 91 inches and a Block Jump of 106 inches and it’s clear this athlete has potential. In prep competition Michalski played for St. Johns, where she is a member of the class of 2023 according to Michigangirlssportsreport.com.
LAUREN HIGGS
This Setter from Redline Volleyball 15 Black in Battle Creek shows that she can go high with the set at the net or use the dig from waist level or lower to accentuate what the rest of her squad has going on in her game film on Maxpreps.com. Perhaps strongest when playing to the right and passing left, Higgs found a way to parlay 49 sets with Harper Creek High School into 241 assists, 61 digs, 21 kills and 12 aces in 2019-20.
ANGELIA CUTTS
This Setter and Right Side brings a skill-set to Grand Ledge High School that includes a Vertical Touch of nine-foot-one, a Standing Reach of seven-foot-five and a 20 inch Vertical. Right now Cutts wears number six for Attack Volleyball 15U National Green, an organization she’s been a part of since 2015. Living in Lansing and standing five-foot-nine this left-hander also has a grade point average of 3.9 and an Approach Jump of nine-foot-two.
ALAINA BRUBAKER
Wearing number 12 for Athens High School this Setter helped that squad win three out of 10 games in 2019-20. That includes going undefeated in league action. Presently Brubaker, who was born Aug. 1, 2005, according to Redlinevolleyballclub.net, plays for Redline Volleyball 15 Gold. During the prep season her contributions helped guide the Indians to rankings of 271st in the state and 8,121st nationally.
ERICA BINGHAM
Now with Attack Volleyball 15U National Black, this DeWitt High School member of the class of 2023 is right-handed and stands five-foot-nine. Bingham has a Wingspan of 70 inches, a Vertical Touch of eight-foot-11 and a Block Jump of eight-foot-eight, as well, traits she utilizes to the fullest in her role as a Middle Blocker.
When it comes to the roster for Redline Volleyball 15 White, those players include Ella Domingo, Grace Fleck, Abigail Gay and Raegen Gothard.
