The point when volleyball gets that much more competitive here in Michigan for up-and-coming club players is at age 15.
That’s when these individuals first have the chance to compete at the varsity level as freshmen and that’s a challenge only those who’ve experienced it can ever truly recognize. Adding to the list of ever-growing frustrations and challenges for these individual once they get all the broad strokes down are the specifics of their position.
Every spot on the floor has its own set of responsibilities. That means every turn of the rotation puts these 15U players to the test. The circumstances have a way of scrutinizing everything they do and exposing every move they don’t make.
For Outside Hitters height and a strong dominant arm certainly don’t hurt. Development is a very peculiar beast, though. One that moves at its own pace and sees different athletes progress at whatever rate is right for them. Here in Michigan some of the 15U Outside Hitters that are coming up include…
ISABELLE KIRKENDALL
One strength this player shows in her game film on Maxpreps.com is the space she leaves between herself and the net. That allows this freshman at Lenawee Christian High School in Adrian to connect with the ball while moving forward. A strong right hand and true upward mobility doesn’t hurt, either. Presently she plays Outside Hitter for High Street 15 Smack L.
MEGAN YORKE
This freshman, who was born Feb. 27, 2005 according to Redlinevolleyballclub.net, lines up at Outside Hitter and Defensive Specialist for Redline Volleyball Club 15 Black and Harper Creek High School in Battle Creek. In 2019-20 the Beavers went 6-23-5 overall, 0-4 league to earn rankings of 241st in the state and 7,479th nationally.
BRESLYN SIKKENGA
In prep action this member of the class of 2023 spent 2019-20 playing Defensive Specialist for Adrian High School, which finished ranked 336th in the state with a record of 3-17-2 overall, 1-8 league. During that time she charted 11 digs and four aces in 16 sets played. Right now she’s listed as an Outside Hitter High Street 15 Smack L in Lenawee County.
ALIVIA SMITH
Currently listed as a Right Side/Outside Hitter for High Street 15 Smack L, in high school competition with Vandercook Lake in Jackson in 2019-20 she played Defensive Specialist and Opposite. This season in 124 sets for the Jayhawks Smith racked up 234 digs, 38 kills and 11 aces. In turn those contributions helped her prep team go 35-10-4 overall, 7-3 league, to end up ranked 98th in Michigan and 2,989th nationally.
MICHIGAN VOLLEYBALL ACADEMY 15 BLACK
Playing Outside Hitter for this team with a reach of seven-foot-nine, a jump of nine-foot-nine and a height of six-foot-one includes Shelby Porter Shelby Porter 6'1" | RS Kenowa Hills | 2023 State MI and Cathryn Haven is five-foot-10 with a jump of nine-foot-five and a reach of seven-foot-seven.
HIGH STREET 15 ZUMA
The Outside Hitters for this squad include Addisyn Kostoff, Dalay Ojeda, Claire Johnson and Abigail Jabkiewicz. Also playing Outside Hitter for High Street 15 Smack L includes Emily Wagner.
As for Redline Volleyball Club 15 White, that roster features athletes such as Jaiden Weitting, Anna Stricker, Emmalee Parrish, Chelci Northern and Kendal Hoefler. Redline Volleyball Club 15 Gold, on the other hand, includes Kalyn Smith, Leila Overbeek, Carley Gordon, Cameron Farkas and Katherin Doyle.
When it comes to SuperNova Volleyball 15 Red Clarkston, among those athletes are Delani Emery, Gracie Howard, Peyton McCafferty, Brooke Anderson and Kennedy Thompson, all of which are members of the class of 2023 according to Supernovavolleyball.com. Graduating that same year for SuperNova Volleyball 15 Black Clarkston includes Abigail Milkowski, Abby Hurst, Carolina Ibarra and Stephanie Ploch.
