While a number of players have the ability to play the middle and outside in this class, their ability to be a blocking wall defensively remains constant.
Here’s five middles from the Class of 2022 that really shine.
Serena Nyambio Serena Nyambio 6'2" | MB Country Day | 2022 State #17 Nation MI , Detroit Country Day/Michigan Elite
The 6’2” Nyambio is as an explosive a player you will find at the net as anyone. She has a great vertical that makes her play well above her opposition. That leads to devastating attacks and huge blocks on defense. Nyambio has made Country Day a sleeper in the Division 2 race and now is part of a very deep roster of middle options at Michigan Elite 16 Mizuno.
Evelyn Doezema Evelyn Doezema 6'2" | OH Grand Rapids Christian | 2022 State #34 Nation MI , Grand Rapids Christian/FaR Out
[player_tooltip player_id="24853" first="Evelyn" last="Doezema"]The 6’3” Doezema has been making a shift to the outside, but got established in the middle and is still a dominant player no matter where she is at the net. This past fall for Grand Rapids Christian, she put down 351 kills and tallied 74 blocks. An improving passing and serving game is making Doezema develop into a complete player, but her intimidating presence at the net is still her strongest asset.
Kimani Johnson Kimani Johnson 6'3" | RS Cass Tech | 2022 State #137 Nation MI , Cass Tech/Michigan Elite
Johnson is another player that can play anywhere on the net and she can go swing-for-swing with anyone. She’s a finisher with a great reach and vertical. Johnson is always engaged in the play and puts herself in the right position to finish points. Defensively, she puts up a big wall as she gets well above the net and does a good job of reading opposing hitters. A complete player, Johnson is definitely one of the top talents in the Class of 2022.
Sarah Sylvester Sarah Sylvester 6'3" | MB Marian | 2022 State #126 Nation MI , Marian/Michigan Elite
[player_tooltip player_id="24877" first="Sarah" last="Sylvester"]An ankle injury in the fall didn’t keep from Sylvester from making strides in her game. She put down 116 kills while hitting .332 in limited action, while also racking up 61 blocks. As a freshman at Marian, Sylvester had 72 blocks. The 6’3” middle is a multi-sport athlete that is able to display great footwork. Sylvester makes proper adjustments at the net and is an adaptable player that is set to really become a dominant middle in the state for years to come.
Cari Bohm Cari Bohm 6'4" | MB Ann Arbor Skyline | 2022 State #39 Nation MI , Ann Arbor Huron/Legacy
Bohm has been dealing with some bad luck during the prep seasons, with injuries keeping her from being able to showcase her skills. However, she was having a breakout club season in 2020 before play was halted. Bohm stands 6’4”, giving her a big size advantage at the net against most opponents. But, she moves likes someone much smaller and has been finishing at a high rate for Legacy 16-1 Adidas. Her blocking is always on point, but her improvement on the attack is set to make her a name to watch out for in the 2020 prep season.
