Having an elite setter immediately raises a team to another level. The setter isn’t just responsible for setting up a hitter, they are the leaders on the court and the ones that need to know everything about every athlete on the floor for both teams.
In the Class of 2021, there are some veteran setters that have proven their skills year-after-year.
Here’s the top five table setters in the state of Michigan for the Class of 2021.
Julia Bishop Julia Bishop 5'10" | S Mercy | 2021 State MI , Mercy/Michigan Elite
It would be hard to find a better representative of the setter position than Bishop. She took over the role at Mercy as a freshman and showcased the confidence and calm you want to see in a floor general. That has carried on to an outstanding prep career with a Division 1 state title in 2019, along with a standout club career at Michigan Elite. A multi-sport athlete, Bishop is just a competitor that is determined to succeed. This past prep season, Bishop put up over 1,500 assists and 300 digs, while approaching 100 aces. While Bishop has a deep roster of elite hitters to work with, she is part of the reason those hitters have become elite. For the Class of 2021 in this state, Bishop is the measuring stick at setter. The Michigan State commit is also one of the top setters nationally.
Lydia Harper Lydia Harper 6'1" | S Caledonia | 2021 State MI , Caledonia/FaR Out
Harper has been the foundation of the Caledonia volleyball team and has been a prospect that FaR Out has been heavily invested in over the years. The Miami (Ohio) commit has a complete game. Last fall, for Caledonia, she finished as one of the kill leaders, while also leading the team in blocks and aces. Harper is up for any challenges and she takes it head on. Her competitiveness is going to lead her to big things at the next level.
Sophia Powell Sophia Powell 5'9" | S Lowell | 2021 State MI , Lowell/FaR Out
[player_tooltip player_id="50309" first="Sophia" last="Powell"]Powell ran the powerful Lowell offense in 2019 and put up over 1,550 assists and also managed 166 kills while hitting .386 on her attacks. Powell had a great connection with fellow 2021 standout, Jenna Reitsma Jenna Reitsma 5'11" | OH Lowell | 2021 State MI , and knew where to get her the ball. She also was able to mix things up at the right time to a collection of other talented hitters. Now with FaR Out 17 Black, Powell was continuing to improve on the details of the position while showing the leadership skills that she displaying last fall.
Grace Allread Grace Allread 5'9" | S West Bloomfield | 2021 State MI , West Bloomfield/Legacy
Allread has been a big reason in the recent rise of the West Bloomfield program. The Liberty commit is excelling with Legacy 17-1 Adidas and has continued to improve her skills. Allread sets a smooth ball that puts her hitters in position to succeed and her positive attitude is infectious to everyone around her. Allread never lets a bad point linger, which is important from a team leader. Allread should have West Bloomfield ready to breakout for a big 2020 season.
Samantha Boeve, Grand Haven/Inside Out
Boeve had a strong 2019 prep season for Grand Haven, as she approached 1,500 assists. However, it’s her all-around game that really shines. Boeve has been strong in most areas of the game, as she was one of Grand Haven’s leaders in digs, blocks and aces. For Inside Out 17 Black, Boeve provided the team with a confident leader that connected well with her hitters. With Grand Haven losing a big talent in Ashley Slater Ashley Slater 5'10" | OH Grand Haven | 2020 State MI for the 2020 season, Boeve’s talents are going to be needed more than ever.
