Continue ReadingWisconsin is known as America’s Dairyland because of its long history in the cheese and dairy production. The Midwest is also big on the volleyball scene, and Wisconsin has produced more than just dairy. Milwaukee, Madison, and the Fox Valley area clubs have a history of being dominant in Wisconsin, but there are some real lively attackers north of Hwy 29. Here are some Northern swings that are ready to get back on the court. These players are simply dynamic at the net.
Aubrey Syryczuk – 5’7 – Pin Hitter – Gilman
Syryczuk is poised to take a leadership position with her high school team in 2020. She loads in her approach so well that she explodes and can hang in the air for a while, helping her outlast her opposing blockers. Syryczuk’s attack really is a work of art since she is so quiet, and you just don’t see her coming until she’s already hit the ball.
Destiny BaughmanDestiny Baughman – 5’6 – Outside Hitter – McDonell Central
Baughman is a high flying outside from McDonell in Chippewa Falls, and she is smaller, but she can jump out of the gym. This player is going to have a strong junior season while taking on more of the workload. We cannot wait to see how Baughman has improved in the fall.
Grace Holschuh Grace Holschuh 5'11" | OH Luxemburg Casco | 2022 State WI – 5’10 – Outside Hitter – Luxemburg-Casco
Holschuh is a highflyer from Division 2 Champion Luxemburg-Casco. She takes approaches so seamlessly that it’s almost like she was born to do just that. Holschuh is a natural athlete and will explode as an upperclassman for the Flyers in 2020. She has long arms, which help her get a high contact and hit over a lot of opposing blockers. She has gotten some great training with Jeff Frey, as well as from the FC Elite satellite program this past winter. I can’t wait to see where she ends up!
Hanne JohnsonHanne Johnson – 5’11 – Pin Hitter/Setter – Grantsburg
Johnson is never rushed on the court, and you can see it in her cool, calm, and collected style of play. She does a great job of accelerating through her approach, and she punctuates her attack with an arm swing that is truly an assault on the opposing team’s defense. Johnson gets set from anywhere across the net, and sometimes in the back row, when she is not setting. When you see her make a good connection. you will understand why.
Hope Baillargeon Hope Baillargeon 5'11" | MB Somerset | 2022 State WI – Pin Hitter – Somerset
Baillargeon is a six-rotation player for Somerset. and she has taken a lot of responsibility for her team in her first 2 high school seasons. She is dominant at the net and demolishes any overpasses in her vicinity. I hope we get to see more of Somerset in the future because this is one seriously underrated player with a very bright future.
[player_tooltip player_id="90605" first="Katie" last="Pierce"]Katie Pierce Katie Pierce 6'2" | MB Tomahawk | 2022 State WI – 6’2 – Middle Blocker/Right Side Hitter – Tomahawk
Pierce takes one of the most aggressive swings I have seen. She can swing from anywhere across the net, and she is efficient in her ability to score. Pierce will take on a bigger workload in the fall with Tomahawk graduating a couple of big weapons. She is versatile and powerful, and I can’t wait to see how they decide to utilize her.
Lexie Lohman – Outside Hitter – Superior
Lohman is quick off the ground and contacts the ball with authority. It’s fun to watch her transition out of serve-receive to attack. Lohman is very fluid and takes charge no matter where she is on the court.
Olivia HammelOlivia Hammel – 5’8 – Outside Hitter – Abbotsford
Abbotsford is known in the Marawood Conference for having athletic outside hitters, and Hammel is no exception to this rule. At first glance, you wouldn’t expect the firepower she can put out, and she makes teams pay for underestimating her. Hammel plays for a solid high school program just north of Hwy 29 in Central Wisconsin and will lead yet another tough young group of Falcons for the next couple years.
