Here are five underrated 7th Region defensive specialists.
Alyssa Alvarez: A senior defensive specialist, Alvarez is preparing to take the floor for Walden High School in her final prep season. Consistent, Alvarez helped to pace Walden, which claimed 15 wins, throughout 2019. Alvarez is quick and digs and pursues well. Able to transition easily, Alvarez has produced along the front row consistently as well.
Olivia Benner: A sophomore defensive specialist, Benner chipped in for Ballard High School during the 2019 prep volleyball season. As a freshman, Benner appeared in 94 sets for Ballard in 2019, registering 89 digs, 292 assists and 30 service aces. Versatile, Benner is a proven passer who is an efficient server.
Maria Mardis: A senior defensive specialist/setter, Mardis was among the leaders for Christian Academy-Louisville in 2019. Mardis recorded 419 assists, 104 digs and 73 service aces for Christian Academy-Louisville during the 2019 high school volleyball season. An accurate passer who excels offensively and defensively, Mardis possesses stellar back row skills.
Madilyn O’Toole: A senior defensive specialist, O’Toole appeared in the majority of matches for Assumption in 2019, its latest state championship season. O’Toole recorded 179 digs in 35 matches prior to competing in the 2019 KHSAA Volleyball State Tournament. A versatile player who has shown the ability to produce from the front row, O’Toole is expected to take on a larger role for Assumption during the 2020 prep volleyball season.
Olivia Roemer: A senior defensive specialist, Roemer is poised to return to the court for improving Kentucky Country Day in her final prep season. Roemer recorded nearly 200 digs for Kentucky Country Day as a junior in 2019. A solid back row hitter, Roemer has shown athleticism and the ability to move around the court.
