Continue ReadingSouthern Minnesota volleyball has become the main stage for A and AA volleyball. From Mabel Canton to Kasson Mantorville handful of athletes have become household names as well as top recruits. The HVL is arguably the biggest and most competitive conference south of the Twin Cities. Over 20 athletes were named All Conference in 2019 including: Erin Lamb Erin Lamb 6'3" | MB Stewartville | 2021 State MN – Stewartville 2021, Mya Suess – Kasson-Mantorville 2021, Ally Peterson Ally Peterson 5'9" | OH Kenyon-Wanamingo | 2020 State MN – Kenyon-Wanamingo 2020, Delaney Issendorf –Lake City 2021, and more who will be returning as seniors.
Adding to the competition are a couple dozen players who were recognized as All Conference Honorable Mention in 2019 and are an essential part of the HVL. Here is and all-star line up made from the honorable mention athletes:
Hanna Gadient is the talented setter from Goodhue. And although basketball is her top sport she is equally talented in volleyball. Under her guidance, her team nearly beat Kenyon Wanamingo in sections. She has also spent time playing with other standouts from the area on the Southern Elite Energy club team.
Opposite of Gadient in line-up is an up and coming right-side hitter from Stewartville – Allie Elliot. As a sophomore she gained valuable experience in the Tigers state championship run. She is an excellent blocker and will be able to showcase her other skills the next several years as a 2022 graduate. Her versatility means she could play nearly any position.
The HVL has it’s share of tall middles, some who have graduated but two who have just started hitting their stride. First, Chloe Staub (cover) is a dynamic hitter from Triton. She has mastered her angles and always seems to find a way to hit past the blockers. Perhaps her best hit is the slide she runs to the right side. Her time spent on the SMV 18-1 Black club team has given her the strength, skills and experience to be one of the best middles in the HVL.
Likewise, Grace Bany from Lake City is a tall, talented force in the middle. Despite having to deal with minor injuries she has given the Tigers the burst of energy needed to outlast other in section playoffs the last few years. Her blocking is effective and if given more opportunities to attack, it would elevate her to the next level.
When selecting from the list of outsides that were named as honorable mentions, it is hard to just pick two. This group has some of the most athletic players the conference has to offer. Here are our top 3:
- Noelle VanOort, Kasson-Mantorville 2021 : A growing star with great experience in high pressure matches.
- Lindsey Rossow Lindsey Rossow 5'7" | OH Rochester Lourdes | 2023 MN , Rochester Lourdes 2023 : A young talented player who’s passing form is exceptional
- Brenna Essig, Triton 2021 : A tough server who makes very few mistakes and can play any position.
