No area of Indiana makes that more worthwhile than Southern Indiana, where in the this particular class, our top five kids represent five different high schools.
Gabby Dean Gabby Dean 6'5" | MB Columbus East | 2023 State #53 Nation IN , 6-4, MB, Team Indiana Elite 16 (16-1), Columbus East High School
The tallest and easily most sought-after available middle in any class in Indiana is Gabby. Also note that she’s playing up a year and holding her own, thankyouverymuch. I define her attack touch as “over everyone” and her attack style as “terminal”. She also has the length to block everyone and goes pin to pin much faster than anticipated. Big Ten and SEC schools are already on her radar, and I anticipate that she won’t be on the uncommitted list for long.
Grace Purichia Grace Purichia 5'7" | S Providence | 2023 State #149 Nation IN , 5-7, S, Union 15 Asics (15-1), Providence High School
From a family of volleyball gym rats, Grace is a brilliant setter who’s just as adept on defense as she is in running an offense. Every ball she gets her hands on is hittable, and she makes up for her team’s passing mistakes by setting a better ball. There isn’t another setter in this class that I like and respect more than Grace, and, like Gabby above, it won’t be long before she’s committed to a high-level volleyball school, despite her size.
Cali Cummings Cali Cummings 6'1" | MB Seymour | 2023 State IN , 6-0, MB/OH, Union 15 Asics (15-1), Seymour High School
Just up Interstate 65 from Grace is her club teammate, Cali. Her attack touch is over 9-6 and rising, and her ability to find the floor consistently makes her a can’t-miss prospect in this class. I also like her ability to go pin to pin on defense. Wan’t a solid middle? Cali is yours.
Cadence Ast Cadence Ast 6'2" | MB Bloomington South | 2023 State IN , 6-2, MB, Circle City 15 Purple (15-1), Bloomington South High School
Just a bit further northwest of Cali is another solid middle prospect in Cadence. She’s the M1 on arguably the best 15s team in the state, and has springs for legs. She’s already blocking over 9-2 and can attack at over 9-7. From another winning high school program at South (coached by former IU assistant Eugene Kim), Cadence has no choice but to be successful. I look forward to the continuation of our club season and Miss Ast’s development.
Caroline Hilbrich Caroline Hilbrich 5'9" | OH Floyd Central | 2023 State IN , 5-9, OH, Union 15 Asics (15-1), Floyd Central High School
Wrapping up our Southern Indiana trip in the class of 2023 is the only true outside on this list, Caroline Hilbrich Caroline Hilbrich 5'9" | OH Floyd Central | 2023 State IN . She’s won at multiple levels in both high school and club and can attack well on both pins. Like most Union kids, she has a natural volleyball IQ that just can’t be taught. Additionally, she’s a six-rotation player that can also double as a regular DS. This class doesn’t have another pure OH1 rated as high as Miss Hilbrich, and she’s only getting better.
