The state has been able to produce talented liberos and defensive specialists that have went on to excel at the Division 1 talent.
In the Class of 2022, there are many talented back-row players that are clearing a path to a college future. Here’s five that have really stood out.
Josie Bloom Josie Bloom 5'6" | DS/L Notre Dame Prep | 2022 State #150 Nation MI , Notre Dame Prep/Legacy
Bloom was another young standout for the Irish in 2018, and really has taken her game to another level over the last year. Bloom provided ND Prep with one of the top back rows in the state in 2019, and her play with Legacy 16-1 Adidas has been exemplary. Bloom has great focus and reaction time on the court. She continues to prove she is among the best in the state at her position.
Jessica Mondragon Jessica Mondragon 5'6" | DS/L Northville | 2022 MI , Northville/Michigan Elite
Mondragon comes from a program that also has been able to produce great back-row talent, Northville. The Class of 2022 defender for the Mustangs has shown the traits that you want out of a successful libero. She reads the court well and puts herself in the best position to succeed on each play. Mondragon has the work ethic to elevate her game to another level in the next year.
Sierra Nausieda, Grand Rapids Catholic Central/MVA
Nausieda is the defensive staple of MVA 16 Black and Grand Rapids Catholic Central. She is a very athletic talent in the back row that has displayed consistent passing and effort. Nausieda is able to keep her teams in-system and brings out the best in the rest of her teammates. Her leadership is what you like to see out of a young star.
Lyse Bates Lyse Bates 5'4" | DS/L Portage Northern | 2022 State MI , Portage Northern/Dead Frog
Bates has really been testing her game and playing against top players during her time with Dead Frog volleyball. Bayes competes for 18 Black, playing up in age as a young talent. During the prep season, Bates shined for Portage Northern and will be their foundation for years to come. Part of an athletic family, Bates is set to be a name to keep an eye on these next 24 months.
Amina Robinson Amina Robinson 5'6" | DS/L Mercy | 2022 State MI , Mercy/Michigan Elite
Robinson was given the keys to the back row for Mercy in the fall of 2019 and proved to be the final piece to their championship puzzle. Her poise and performance allowed the powerful Mercy offense to stay in-system and roll on to the Division 1 state title. With that experience to rely on, Robinson has shown a lot of confidence during the club season and is sure to exponentially grow her game in the next 12 months.
