This past year saw a number of Michigan’s best emerge, including a phenom in the class of 2023.
Here’s a look at the top performers from the Ann Arbor-area over the last 12 months.
Hannah Blaney Hannah Blaney 5'5" | DS/L Saline | 2021 State MI , L/DS Saline/Legacy (2021)
The recent Rhode Island-commit has been improving her game a great deal in recent years. Saline remained a competitive team in the Division 1 picture this past season and Blaney certainly had a big role in that. She then took that consistent play into Legacy during the shortened club season. Great reaction time, readability and footwork has Blaney as a top libero in the state.
Jenna Vaske Jenna Vaske 5'11" | S Charyl Stockwell | 2021 State MI , RS/S Charyl Stockwell/Michigan Elite (2021)
A versatile player that can hit and set, Vaske has been a foundational piece for a talented Charyl Stockwell program. In 2019, Vaske hit .300 while posting over 460 kills, 340 digs and 80 aces. Vaske didn’t do much setting for the Sentinels, but has the skills to move to that position. Michigan Elite has been able to showcase all of her skills and take her game to another level in recent club years.
Jaden Rice Jaden Rice 6'0" | OH Northville | 2021 State MI , MH/RS Northville/Legacy (2021)
Rice is someone that has climbed up our Class of 2021 rankings due to her ability to play on the outside or in the middle, finishing at a high rate in both positions. Rice has turned into a go-to hitter for Northville and that confidence has only grown at Legacy. Her court instincts are really improving, and that is going to make her a tough hitter to stop in the 2020 fall season.
Sophia Oakes Sophia Oakes 5'5" | DS/L Pinckney | 2021 State MI , L/DS Pinckney/Michigan Elite (2021)
Oakes was all over the floor for Pinckney in the 2019 prep season, approaching 700 digs on the year. She also has a solid serve and can even put down a solid swing when the time calls for it. Oakes ability to get to any ball has her as a valuable piece for Michigan Elite, keeping her team in-system regularly. Oakes will give Pinckney one of the most trusted defensive players in the state for 2020.
Jenna Boksha Jenna Boksha 5'10" | OH Northville | 2021 State MI , OH Northville (2021)
Another standout hitter for Northville, Boksha is showing the all-around game to really be impactful for the Mustangs. She was thrust into a bigger role in 2019 and face it head on. Boksha showed that she could excel anywhere on the floor and had the leadership capabilities to guide Northville to a lot of success.
Livvy Setla Livvy Setla 5'5" | DS/L Northville | 2021 State MI , L/DS Northville/Legacy (2021)
Setla has found herself a home at UNLV in 2021 and she has been making the back row of Northville and Legacy her home for years. Setla has a competitive fire that you need out of a libero and her effort is matched by her fundamental skills for the position. If there is a ball in play, Setla is going to get to it, or die trying.
Cari Bohm Cari Bohm 6'4" | MB Ann Arbor Skyline | 2022 State #39 Nation MI , MH Ann Arbor Huron/Legacy (2022)
While injuries kept Bohm from making much of an impact in the 2019 prep season, she exploded in the shortened 2020 club season with Legacy 16-1 Adidas. Already easy to spot with her 6’4” frame, Bohm caught many eyes with her explosive play at the net. A dominant block, and a high-percentage finisher, Bohm is definitely one of the top middles in the entire state.
Jessica Mondragon Jessica Mondragon 5'6" | DS/L Northville | 2022 MI , L/DS Northville/Michigan Elite (2022)
Part of a talented back row at Northville, Mondragon has the ability to hold her own with any of the top defensive players in the state. She’s got the speed and precision to keep balls in play and has faced some of the best hitters in the state as well. Her experience is very valuable to any team she is part of, club or prep.
Lauren Lee Lauren Lee 5'9" | S Skyline | 2022 State MI , S Ann Arbor Skyline/Legacy (2022)
Lee was sidelined with an injury for most of the 2019 prep season, but she definitely has the potential to be a breakout star in the 2020 season for Skyline. She approached 1,000 assists as a freshman for the Eagles and now has one of the best players in the state to feed for 2020. Legacy has brought out some new wrinkles for Lee, and she has to be excited to put her skills on display for her prep team.
Harper Murray Harper Murray 6'2" | OH Skyline | 2023 State #2 Nation MI , OH Ann Arbor Skyline/Legacy (2023)
There isn’t a member of the Class of 2023 that has made a bigger impact in the state, and maybe the nation, than Murray. After earning All-State honors in Division 1 with Skyline thanks to helping the Eagles to the state semifinals. Murray had 700 kills in her freshman season to go along with over 150 aces and over 475 digs. She followed that up by helping Legacy 15-1 Adidas go perfect in tournament play and earn a Triple Crown championship. Murray has the potential to be the best player the state has produced.
