All finished with results at state that were below their high expectations. Here are a few players from the class of 2021 worth keeping your eyes on for the 2020 season. Their performance could be the key to their team and the division breaking through to the next level at State.
McKenna Dorscht, 6’ 0”, Middle, Seattle Prep
Seattle Prep was hoping for better results at the State Tournament in 2019. Dorscht made all Metro League first team and will likely be the focal point of the offense in the 2020 season. Her connection with her setters, Mia Meighan and Jessica McDowall will have a big impact on how their season goes.
Claire Donovan, Libero, Eastside Catholic
Donovan could find herself as the key component in Eastside Catholics 2020 season. Her squad is full of tall senior hitters. Her passing and defense will be the key to unlocking their offensive potential. Coming off a 2019 season where she earned first team all Metro League honors, she will look to continue consistently high performances and help the Crusaders improve on their 2019 State Championship disappointment.
Catherine Mader, Middle, Lakeside
Lakeside has oodles of young talent on their roster. The leadership of Mader at the middle position alongside the offensive firepower of fellow senior Alena Korbko will make Lakeside a contender this year and help develop youngsters like Rebecca DePencier Pinero into favorites for the state championship in years to come.
Claire Fitzgerald, Middle, Holy Names
If Holy Names is going to earn a berth to state in 2020, Fitzgerald is going to have to carry a big chunk of their offensive load. She is the lone six footer on the Holy Names roster and will have to work hard to draw the attention of the opposing defense to open up opportunities for her teammates to score points.
It wouldn’t be out of the question for the Metro League to have two or three of the top five seeds in the state tournament in 2020. Much of the success of the league could be dependent on the performances of these seniors and their underclassman down the stretch.
