Many of the coaches I talked to were excited to get back into the gym and weight room and start to work with their athletes again. Alliance’s Head Coach Jessica Kaiser said her team has been doing the weight room 4 days a week and a few open gyms each week. When more restrictions get lifted in July they are hoping to get to a camp and maybe reschedule some of their league scrimmages that they missed. Here are the players to keep on your radar:
Amauri Browning 5’8″ OH Junior from Alliance: Honorable Mention All-State in Omaha World Herald last season as a sophomore. She had 140 kills, 308 digs and 27 aces for the Bulldogs in her sophomore campaign. Look for big things from her this coming fall.
Logan Holly 5’9″ OH Senior from Sidney plays club for Norco Club in Windsor, Colorado: Logan had 283 kills, 259 digs and an amazing 98 aces last year as a junior for the Raiders. Coach Smith said that Logan has done a great job making connections and mentoring 3rd and 4th graders in her building where Smith works as a counselor. Look for her to take on a leadership role this fall.
Carleigh Pszanka 6’0″ RH Sophomore from Gering: Look for this sophomore to be a huge force at the net against opposing outsides for sure! She registered 89 kills on the right side with 104 blocks in her freshman debut.
Maddie Ray 6’1″ OH Sophomore from Gering: Ray had registered 139 kills and 81 blocks as freshman for the Bulldogs.
Coach Amanda Cochran says her Bulldog squad has a lot of potential this year. They will be huge up front and she looks for a lot of growth out of her front row players this year. They will be competing in Kearney at NE Top Ten Camp, Chadron State and Ogalalla’s Team Camp in July.
When I visited with the new Raider’s Head Coach Julie Smith about some of the challenges of being new to the district and team and then COVID-19. “The week before the COVID-19 shutdown, I had the opportunity to meet with most of the team in a 10-minute informal meet and greet,” Julie said. “Since then, we have maintained contact through email and SportsYou, attempting to maintain some sense of normalcy. This is a quality volleyball program that graduated four starters. I feel that the incoming seniors are excited to take on the role of leadership within the team and the underclassmen are excited to make the step to the next level. She challenged the seniors in a variety of ways during our “Learn from Home” time, in regard to leadership.” Smith said they have embraced it and she is excited to see how it transfers over when they are able to get together as a team – face to face! They are continuing to communicate and have workout challenges via email and SportsYou. Right now, they are making the best of it and looking forward to true gym time!
