Continue ReadingIn the world of Volleyball, the Setter is the leader of the offense many times teams can live and die by the ability of their setter. Setters must be able to read the other team’s defense and choose a hitter, while giving them the best match up possible. If the setter gives away their intended match too early, then the blockers can move easy creating a two on one match up. This will put more pressure on the hitter to thread the needle instead of looking for the hole on the court. Further challenging the Setter is the passing of her teammates – the pass most times will dictate the play. Few Setters can get their hands on a shanked ball while even fewer can redirect a shanked pass into a play.
The goal is to have consistent passing allowing for in-system setting which will lead to the best hitter and blocker match up. A solid pass also keeps the Setter from forcing a play leading to trapping her hitter against the net and placing her teammate at a disadvantage.
However, the most exciting part of a Setter’s game is the way in which they attack their position and the ball. Each position has a standard way of playing but the beauty of volleyball really starts to flow when a player comes into their own; playing their position with their own personal flare.
